In addition to marking a turning point in the nation's history, today's election will also decide the future of candidates and measures across North Dakota.
Across the nation today, voters will make history, either by electing Barack Obama as the United States' first black president or electing John McCain as president, therefore making Sarah Palin the first female vice president in history.
In North Dakota, we'll vote on a host of legislative races, as well as statewide offices, headlined by the race for governor. There are also four initiated statewide measures on the ballot.
Locally, there is a wide variety of issues and offices on the ballot. The Ward County Commission could be reshaped by this election, and there are area legislative races that will help shape the makeup of the 2009 Legislature. In addition, there are local measures on the ballot.
The point is this: There's a lot riding on today's election, both nationally and locally. We encourage eligible voters to take a few minutes of their time to vote. Polls in Minot are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The political system works only if voters get involved, especially on the local level. If you want a say in how your local government works, today's the opportunity to express your opinion through your vote. Democrat, Republican, Independent or other party, please exercise your right to vote today.
