School’s open: Be safe
With Minot Public Schools beginning classes Thursday, all area schools are now back in session.
Bishop Ryan and Our Redeemer's began classes last week, while Minot State University students hit the books again earlier this week.
With the beginning of school comes a few yearly reminders:
There are a lot more vehicles on the streets in the morning and again when schools dismiss after 3 p.m. We encourage drivers to slow down and be more aware of their surroundings, especially if they're driving anywhere near a school. We already came across an accident Thursday morning near Minot State. Not exactly the way someone wanted their school year to begin, we're guessing. Our best advice: If it's between 3 and 3:30 p.m. on a school day and you don't have to drive in the area of a school, don't. You'll save yourself some time and headache.
There are a lot more children riding bike and walking before and after school. There are clearly marked crosswalks near every grade school in town, but sometimes children will be children and cross a street when they're not supposed to. It's up to the drivers to be alert.
The beginning of another school year is an exciting time for students, parents, faculty, teachers and other staff members. But it also means there are some hectic days ahead for everyone. Let's make sure they're safe days.
