Kenmare boy killed in two-vehicle crash

POWERS LAKE A two-vehicle accident that occurred two miles east of Powers Lake, resulted in the death of an area boy and the injury of two men.

Killed was 16-year-old Russell Nelson, Kenmare, a passenger in a 1968 Oldsmobile driven by 43-year-old Todd Nelson of Kenmare. Russell Nelson was administered CPR on the scene but was pronounced dead on arrival after being transported by ambulance to the Mountrail County Medical Center in Stanley. Russell Nelson was not wearing a seat belt.

Todd Nelson suffered injuries and was also transported to the Mountrail County Medical Center.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 2008 Chevrolet pickup, was 54-year-old William Atol of Williston. Atol was taken by ambulance to the Mountrail County Medical Center with unknown injuries. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

According to a North Dakota Highway Patrol report, the vehicle driven by Todd Nelson was southbound on Burke County Road 11 from Flaxton and failed to stop at a stop sign on N.D. Highway 50. Nelson's vehicle struck the pickup truck driven by Atol, who was westbound on Highway 50.

The accident occurred at 5:20 p.m. Friday. The Highway Patrol, Burke County Sheriff's Department, Powers Lake police, ambulance and fire rescue and the Stanley ambulance, responded to the accident scene.
