Hazel Tinjum

Hazel Tinjum, 90, from Powers Lake, died Thursday, July 24, 2008, in a Stanley nursing home.
Hazel Marion was born January 3, 1918, in Cleary Township, Burke County, northeast of Battleview, ND, to Julius and Emma (Olson) Strand.
After her father's death in 1920, she moved with her mother and sisters to Lintlaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, to live with her mother's brother, Ole Bakken, where they lived for three years. They moved to the farm of her grandparents, Tollef and Maren (Olson) Bakken, near Hoople, where they lived for two years. Hazel started school at Mount View School in Dundee Township of Walsh County, ND.
In 1925 the family returned to their farm in Cleary Township of Burke County. She continued her education at Liberty School No. 2. She was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church near Lunds Valley on October 2, 1932. She married Ernest Sellie on November 15, 1938. They resided in Powers Lake where they were partners in Sellie's Ford and also farmed. Ernest died May 23, 1950. She later worked at Sellie's Super Valu store.
Hazel married Clarence Tinjum on December 21, 1955. They lived east of Powers Lake in Vanville Township, where they farmed and raised Hereford cattle. She enjoyed the outdoors, living and working on the farm, and their collie dogs. Clarence died on May 8, 1996. She lived on the farm until moving to the Mountrail Bethel Home, Stanley, on January 3, 2004, but continued to spend time on her farm in the summers.
Hazel was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Powers Lake, and the Holy Cross Quilters. She had also been a member of the Battleview Birthday Club. She enjoyed flowers, crafts, and crocheting.
Hazel is survived by 16 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ernest Sellie and Clarence Tinjum; her parents; and sisters, Myrtle Titus and Evelyn Welter.
Funeral service: Monday, July 28, 2008, at 4 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Powers Lake, with burial at Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Powers Lake.
Visitation: Sunday, 5 to 7 p.m., at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Powers Lake.
Family gathering: Sunday at 7 p.m. at the church.
