Vistas lose lead, then rally

RAPID CITY, S.D. - For the second straight game, the Minot Vistas lost a late lead to an opponent at the Pev Evans Tournament

This time, however, the Vistas rallied.

Minot gave up two runs in the top of the seventh, but rallied on a Darin Back pinch-hit single in the bottom of the inning to defeat Omaha (Neb.) Skutt 6-5 Friday.

"We were able to wiggle out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh," Vistas head coach Todd Larson said. "We hung in there against a very good team. It would have been tough to lose another one in the seventh like that. The kids are very excited to get the win. We realize we have played with these teams and can win these games."

Minot's Clay Kallias hit a one-out triple to get the rally going. After Skutt walked Dereck Somerville and Zac Elgie to load the bases and forced a fielder's choice from Shane Gathman, Back came through with the clutch two-out hit to right.

"We have shown that we can come back late in games this season. I just wish we didn't have to," Larson said. "We need to get the lead and protect the lead."

Larson praised starting pitcher Josh Oothoudt, who worked six innings in a no decision. Zac Elgie earned the win for the Vistas in relief in the seventh.

"Josh did a very good job on the hill for us. He kept us in the game deep into the game," he said.

Minot (28-10 overall) continues tournament play today with a 3 p.m. contest against Sturgis, S.D.
