Robert Schmaltz

A memorial Mass for Robert L. Schmaltz, 65, Finley, ND, will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 5, 2008, at St. Olaf Catholic Church in Finley. Burial will be in the Finley Cemetery. He died Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at Union Hospital in Mayville, ND.

A prayer service will be held on Sunday at 7 p.m. at St. Olaf.

Robert Leo Schmaltz was born on July 14, 1942, in Rugby, ND, the son of Daniel A. and Frances (Axtman) Schmaltz. He graduated from Balta High School in 1961. Shortly after his graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He served his country from 1961-1963. After his discharge he did construction on the Minutemen Missiles sites in the Finley area.

On May 14, 1966, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Stenberg. They moved to Seattle, WA, where he worked for Boeing. They moved back to Finley where they bought and ran the Red Owl grocery store in 1970. He began farming in 1972, after selling the store. In addition to the farming, he did construction. Bob retired in 2005.

He was a member of St. Olaf Catholic Church in Finley and served on the Finley Cemetery Board.

Bob is survived by: his daughters, Lisa (Trevor) Jacobsen of Luverne, ND, and Cindy (Col. Ed) Rivera of Peyton, CO; his grandchildren, Alyssa, Morgan and Blake Jacobsen and Sienna Rivera; his mother, Frances Schmaltz of Rugby; brothers, Kenneth (Lou) of Ocean Park, WA, and Leonard of East Grand Forks, MN; sisters, Marion (Art) Jensen of Pasco, WA, Loretta (Ron) Weinmann of Devils Lake, ND, and Patty Schmaltz of Goodlettsville, TN; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Raymond; and a sister, Lorraine Wentz.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel of Valley City, ND.
