Phones on a plane? No thanks

December 13, 2013

The Federal Communications Commission still thinks it’s time to end restrictions on making cell phone calls from airplanes. But the Department of Transportation has other ideas....

What's the difference between being next to a person making a phone call, or being the guy in a three row seat that sits beside two people who talk the whole flight? Or being the person in front of a family who's kids are flying for the first time and super excited? What about being next to the folks who bring a newborn baby with? Why do you feel what might be an annoyance to some passengers is fully OK, but cell phone users aren't?

I have flown a lot and I would say more people are quiet, listening to music, playing a game or reading a book than compared to folks engaged in conversation. Not saying it doesn't happen but when I see how rude people can be once that stupid little box gets up to their ear, I say no way. How many people would actually stop talking long enough to put the mask on if there was an emergency? People also get louder when they talk on their phones and have no respect to those around them. Notice how rud efolks get once the plane is parked at the jetway, phones go on and so much for being civilized getting your carry on out of the bin and getting of the plane. Keep it the way it is and the world will be a happier place.

I would rather have "Snakes on a plane".

If this is allowed on planes, then I feel there is a need for Obama to supply Obamaphones to the airlines, so ALL can enjoy their use on the planes....

For some reason a lot of folks when on a phone out in public seem to think they have to speak loudly... I do not need to hear your entire business or personal conversation thank you very much. Always will remember standing in line at the Minot Post Office a couple years back and a guy comes in talking LOUDLY on a speakerphone... We in line were trying hard not to laugh but not sure if the guy on the other end knew his entire conversation was being heard by a line of people at the post office. This is a concern to me only because a lot of people will talk, talk, talk ad nauseum loudly and I don't want to have to sit and hear it.

I agree with filmbeloh20 on the stance of what annoys us. different people are annoyed by different things; most of us know to keep it down when on our phone some people just don't do it and yes they look stupid, but such is life. Also no one seems to make note that our cell phones don't work until around 5,000. minimum of 10,000 feet, so basically throughout the flight you wouldn't be able to make a call anyway, and they require everything stowed for take off and landing anyway, so once you being the "descent" which is about 10,000 feet you would have to be off the phone anyway, so I really don't see the harm in allowing people to use them when they work. My favorite annoyance is that i alway end up sitting in front of someone who believes that he/she has authority to tell me that i am the only individual on the aircraft who cannot recline his seat due to the fact that they are overweight, or over-packed....

In spite of a ditzy computer, your comment was still spot on and well said, Kaye.

I couldn't agree more.

Phones are allowed on Trains and Busses. The only reason it was banned was because it could interfere with the Avionics, but that is no longer the case.

I fly a lot and it would be annoying to be sure, although there are a few times when it would have been very helpful to be able to call. Especially on international flights of 8 hours or more or even domestic flights of 4 hours or more.
