Lincoln's words ring true today

November 25, 2013

A century and a half ago this past week, one of the most profound, beautifully written speeches in the English language was delivered by President Abraham Lincoln....

NoTea4Me,

In your case less is more!

Food for thought:

We all declare for liberty, but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men's labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name Liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names----liberty and tyranny.

Abraham Lincoln 1864

Very depressing and fatalistic, NT4M. I can't completely subscribe to your notions.

I'm thinking a laissez-faire type economy would send you over the edge, with the viewpoint you have.

Another thing: why would you dream of supporting Pres. Obama, if he's another in a long line of puppets?

Why bother?

If it is as you say, NT4M, that we are under a "corporate dictatorship," then all the hoopla about electing or judging any President, Democrat or Republican, should fade away, along with the faithful partisans.

Sorry, just can't subscribe to such fatalism yet. And you don't get that.

Is anyone else sensing the frustration from the left. When we talk about the failed presidency of Obama they still want to blame bush. How far back to we have to go to find someone accountable for the travesty that is going on in this country? Being from a right wing state gives me hope for America. We do take more money from the federal gov than we pay in and I have to ask why didn't the candy store put a stop to it from 2008-2010. When it had a democratically controlled everything. They were too busy intruding into my life.

YOU are the hypocrites who scream about self reliance while your right wing states take in more federal money than they pay in.

NT4M. it is strange and convenient how you seem to lump any and all opposition to your own views into one big blob. It must be easier to lob the verbal bombs at something indistinguishable.

YOU brought up "capitalist pigs" etc. I found a source that says Pres. Obama is involved in Small Business programs to provide investment to small businesses that will engage in capitalistic pursuits.

So which is it? Do you support a Pres. Obama who will stop the evils of capitalism or a Pres. Obama who will help small businesses succeed in their capitalistic pursuits?

Having one's cake and eating it too, NT4M? Looks like it...

Obama is the worst President of my lifetime. Conservative and Liberal politics have never been more divided than any time in history. In the past it was sometimes difficult to determine the social direction of a politician just on his political association. One thing is for sure with Obama, he can't be honest to the people, accept responsibility for anything or hold anyone accountable.

Y'all need to saunter on over to democrats . org to see what's happening with President Obama...

"Government cannot ensure a business’s success, but it can foster the conditions that support hiring of new workers by providing tax relief and increasing the availability of Small Business Administration (SBA) resources. President Obama has cut taxes for small businesses no fewer than eight times, and at President Obama’s direction the SBA has already administered more than 70,000 loans for businesses, providing those businesses with the capital they need to invest and grow."

Now how can supporting capitalism be good in y'all's eyes, NT4M? Get after the President and straighten him out on this policy of his. Double quick now...

Ya'll need to listen to this:

Corruption in high places will follow. The money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working on the PREJUDICES of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the republic is destroyed."

Who is promoting prejudice, racism, and divisive vitriol. We all know, but few say its Presidentless Obama.

Lincoln also said the following, which isn't exactly in line with y'all right wingers:

"As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned, and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working on the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the republic is destroyed."

NT4: well said. He may well have seen the origin of the mil. industrial complex. Apply the quote for minot. What did the city of minot do for the least of our flooded. They told them to "hurry up and rebuild". The Fed has problems, you bet, but at least many in the Fed do no forget those who work every day and end up with too little. They go after those who under pay, cheat some out of their retirements and they try keep the playing field fair for all. Our state has a law that says tax money may not be given to business but only to support the poor. Hey! maybe i'm on to something. Maybe they can't read. Happy Thanksgiving. Remember the food pantries and Salvation Army.
