jcalavera if most people who rent could afford to buy they most likely would. It's hard to save up enough for a downpayment to buy a house when the rent is so high. There are a lot of people living paycheck to paycheck and who work full time.

A property owner should be able to charge what they want for rent. It is their property, not yours. If you think rent should be lower, buy some property and rent it out for what you think is fair.

Sorry Charlie, but rent control is prohibited by the state:

47-16-02.1. Rent controls - Prohibited. A political subdivision may not enact, maintain, or enforce an ordinance or resolution that would have the effect of controlling the amount of rent charged for leasing private residential or commercial property. This section does not impair the right of a political subdivision to manage and control residential property in which the political subdivision has a fee title interest.

If you think this is a bad idea, then perhaps it's time to vote some people into office that believe the same. But don't think for a second that our current elected officials will overturn this section of the Century Code. Too much money to be made.

If the conversation is about rent controls, etc., the republicans start screaming about socialism and communism, and a whole bunch of other things they know nothing about.

You can rent apartments and houses in Shanghai, China for less than what it costs to rent in Minot.

Beautiful places, well built, and in good locations.

Minot is beyond the pale.
