Lots of right wing assumptions in this opinion. Let me see, since no one else does it (clean up the enviorment) then, we should not do it. Now if we build natural gas plants, the price will go up. Isn't one of the reasons why the demand for coal fired electricity is down is because it is cheaper to use natural Gas? So, we have 300 coal fired plants closing because they cannot meet the rules of the EPA or is it because, like the Heskin plant in Billings, they have done nothing to improve the plant for the last twenty years and therefore are way behind in cleanup? Are the ND plants going to close? Nope!! They have kept up with the rules and will made small modifications and they will be in compliance. Most of these coal fired plants are on the east coast and are very, very old. In addition, they have not been upgraded. Another example of the Republicans supporting people who want to circumvent the rules and get special exemptions.

The closed coal plants were old, dirty plants according to the analysis cost us more in health care costs than they save in electrical costs. It varied, but in most cases the health care burden was 3 to 4 times cost of compliance. So, unless the MDN wants to do some work and challenge the numbers, the EPA is actually saving money for people. Basically industry too people's money, ran dirty plants, and, instead of upgrading kept the money. Now we are in the complaint stage much like when the steel industry was shutting down plants they didnt' upgrade for 50 years and blaming labor unions. Carbon dioxide is a separate issue, however the court rules, those dirty power plants aren't coming back.

The big bad epa is certainly not that way in our oil work huh? no pipe monitors or testing there huh? some cry about energy and we waste nat. gas at will in the bakken. tb pickens sees nat. gas as a great new energy source. it is low cost so let's flare it off and waste it! i think epa action on coal is just another right wing wolf cry. tired of it. we probably export coal too.

You can't trust the Obama Administration, it is out of control.

Calpine Energy had natural gas fired generating plants and they went broke when natural gas was at 20 bucks. All because the natural gas trading market had uncontrolled pell mell unbridled greed behind it.

So, what's it going to be? Bankrupt coal-fired generating plants for lack of upgrading or let natural gas fired electricity generating plants go broke from lack of market oversight?

You will have privately owned utilities going broke right and left.

Probably the plan.

Is that the same Calpine industry that was shorted by Lehman brothers on the market and helped destroy confidence in the company? Oh, lest we forget, Lehman made a hundred million dollars in profit on that short. Now, there is a lot more to that story than your little miss direction. Oh, and they are alive and well after they emerged from their bankruptcy procedure. Tell us some of the names of these coal companies and I will tell you the history of coal executives milking coal companies for every drop of profit and then letting them go bankrupt. That is the trademark business dealing of part of the industry.

"Another example of the Republicans supporting people who want to circumvent the rules and get special exemptions."

Like this NEVER happens with Democrats...

*ahem*

Obamacare exemptions for unions, etc.

Obamacare mandate delays for businesses

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain...

I can agree with centerish that ND's coal plants are up-to-date, thus out of trouble and remaining clean.

Part of the credit has to go to former Gov. Art Link for his courageous stand for North Dakotans and coal interests back in his day.

Good on ya!

I'm all for responsible EPA regulations that protect our environment. With that said I'm concerned that this is another effort of Presidolt Obama to use another federal agency to further his political agenda. The war on fossil fuel and to promote his green energy agenda. Where's the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service when wind towers kill eagles? You say what?Protecting eagles not on the agenda, my bad.

Oh wait they're guarding our wild life production areas to keep North Dakotans from hunting on them.

Bill,

Help me understand where you're coming from. I made no reference to farmers, apologies, or oil. We can have civil discourse concerning this if I know what you mean.

Next weeks tirade: Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Have you ever dealt with them? This is not a partisan issue unless Presidolt Obama makes it one. He may decide to use this federal agency to say that garbage cans are too close to the street of too far away.
