Rickrod, put the pipe down when it's hot. The point was to focus on the more important issues, like the violent crime against an officer, and not getting side tracked on Smokey McPotterson telling the world to legalize pot. I could actually care less about pot--good for taxes and good for fast food business. Now go back to your video games you silly little stoner monkey. I'll see if you respond to this post before noon, Sunshine.

Thank you rickrod, for your thought provoking psychological assessment. On an unrelated note, please support our local teachers and remember the value of education.

True Lady Luck - they were probably on their way to Sunday Mass where they serve as alter boys. Maybe they were delivering groceries to the elderly or maybe raising money for charity...get a clue! All I need to know about their character I learned in six words - ATTEMPTED MURDER OF A POLICE OFFICER

Incredible how much these discussions get so far off track. One of our very own police officers was BRUTALLY ATTACKED! How many of you understand that simple concept? Just stop for a second and let that resonate. How about more comments of support for the officer and thanking them for all that they do? Or do we want to show our thanks by acting like pretend lawyers and scrutinizing their actions? Some of these comments are just an embarrassment to all of Minot. THANK YOU MINOT POLICE DEPARTMENT!!!

You cant always judge someone from their past. @richardb punks that makes not sense to judge and to call the all the boys punks, because of one of their actions. they were wrong but you are action in your statement that you were never young and made mistakes. We are all without faults no one is perfect. @billdoesntgetit how do you that these kids didn't have the grades in high school. you are assuming. how do you know that their parents aren't paying their child way. again you assuming. I am not saying what happen was right, but this world and the city has much more going on then these boys getting caught smoking. I said a pray for the all the families involved parents offices and kids.

Let me correct myself. I do believe that the one Ili guy do deserve what ever punishment he gets. there is not reason to have hit punched fought what ever he did to the officers. They were just doing their job. If they were doing what they were suppose to be doing which was not out sitting in a car getting high then this issue would not be. However this is the issue and I believe the other guys who are sitting in jail this is a lesson learned. I don't have questions of my own really. because of the one guy was all the guys really just charged with the same thing? Did they really all have possession drugs on their persons? If they say they were high how do they really know? did they give them a drug test to be sure they were high or was it just a look in the eye? these are the questions I really would like an answer to. @zagsfan is not a they its a he. You had the time to back two years to look on someone facebook page. two years is a long time and people can change. You can not always

They were smoking pot which is against the law. They ingested something that was illegal. They fought with police officers. The NCAA D2 does have drug policies and it should be the coaching staffs duty to at take a look at someones current twitter and facebook accounts.

You people should be ashamed of yourselves. A police officer for the City of Minot, someone who has been sworn to protect and serve his community, was beaten until knocked out, then beaten more in an attempt on his life, and all you can think about is your little political agenda to smoke some weed? An officer nearly lost his life, and not ONE comment supporting him?? Disgusting! My thoughts and prayers go out to the officer, as well as the other officers of the Minot Police Department. I pray for a speedy recovery and a quick return to the job! For the rest of you - get a life!

I said nothing about taking any votes. I have read articles by a black conservative who favors voter ID so more of the blacks will get out to vote.

if the boy would not have thought he was super man and wanted to beat up on a cop, this would not even made the new or paper. it always take just take one. I don't agree with smoking or any type of drugs or drinking, but they are teenagers. when we were all teenagers we all did things our parents didn't want us to or liked. the reason this is looking so bad is because they are athletes who were brought in from different states. I don't think it right to label anyone child as a thug when you don't know their history. I don't know what the punishment will be from the school, team, or the city but I believe spending these night in jail and it being a holiday helped.

MarkHighwater - You're on the beam with your 10:56 comment about the perps' pot-smoking. If that's the only substance they were abusing, they'd have been acting pretty peaceably. I think the cops would be overjoyed if MJ was the only drug people ingested. I should definitely be legalized and taxed. And Taxman5 - The razor-sharpness of your legal mind isn't reflected in your comment. I understand what you're trying to say, but you're saying it pretty awkwardly.

@cutperfect - I don't believe it's a deliberate cover-up, I believe it's just lazy journalism. The MDN never follows up on stories. Their MO is to report an unpleasant story (unpleasant in the sense that it makes Minot look bad) - and then move on to a feel good story about Høstfest or record attendance at the State Fair or whatever.

I don't blame the reporters - in fact there are actually a few very good ones writing for the paper these days - instead I blame their editors and the editor in chief. The MDN is a 'feel good' paper that doesn't want to ruffle any feathers in this town. As the old saying goes, they don't want to s**t where they eat, and they don't want to lose one single advertiser - especially their larger clients (Trinity Health, et.al.)

I have never expected hard hitting journalism from the MDN and never will. The MDN is nothing more than a glorified advertisement for Minot. Blame Ogden Newspapers - their owner. It's how they do business.

@cecil I hope they do throw the book at him, but as a news story, don't be surprised if does get swept under the table. Remember last spring when the kids were shooting at each other on broadway? Have't heard a word about it since. That was an attempted murder charge as well.

The attempted murder charge is due to the fact that the the player knocked the officer unconscious, and then continued to attack him in a manner that could have killed the officer.

And the reason for the charge occurring this quickly? The incident happened in front of multiple officers. This is not going to be swept under the rug - this is a Class A felony. The book should and will be thrown at him.

Also, comparing it to other cases is apples & oranges, and kudos for it only taking 18 comments for the topic to go from the story to voter ID laws. Well played MDN commenters. I'm guessing 23 comments before we get to Obama being responsible somehow.

But denying all the voters of ND the opportunity to vote on two measures doesn't bother you. You have a complete disconnect. Now, for your point about denying voters the right to vote. Studies have shown that “There are eleven states that have vote ID laws, and black voter participation actually increased and exceeded that of whites in nine of them,”. Even Indian reservations use voter ID. Now, you can sleep well tonight. You're welcome! nighty nite

To oscarnd Their are too differences to that the Dui Drive didn't intend to kill that specific person or any other people. Now you ram you car into someone you want to intend harm that would be attempted murder. Then one more if someone started to hit you until you are unconscious like that cop and keep hitting you that is attempted murder. You should read a law book and understand that charge.

If the MDN would actually follow up on stories in Minot we may find out what happens. Crimes that hit the newspaper are reported once and then left behind. Don't paint all college athletes as being the same as the kid that ran and then fought with police. Sorry, but four college kids getting busted for pot isn't a huge story if it isn't for the one idiot who deserves everything he gets. There are far worse crimes daily in this town that don't make the newspaper.

I am not defending Minot State University, but colleges and universities all over the country practice this recruiting....plus, in California only so many people can go to each college just like Michigan...Also look at the track team, a lot of kids from California as well.......
