It’s an age-old question in North Dakota:?When should public schools start classes in the fall? School districts currently set their own calendar, and the state Department of Public Instruction’s......

Agree with "concerned" except for "hunting day". I was publicly ridiculed by teachers for taking "hunting day" off. Only organized school sports qualified for days off--and many were taken. Hunting day is just one day and is now recognized for it's true value. Only a minority of students are jocks or musicians. My concern is with all the other activity days--not hunting day.

I think there are too many days taken off during the year that kids could be spending in school then have a later start and end the same day. The kids don't get a true spring break or even a christmas break. I understand need for a break but hunting day is a school holiday? In addition, state teacher's conference needs to be scheduled sometime else as to where kids get off for school. Something has to give........

The state is currently planning a waiver request to new safer fracking rules. Is fracking less dangerous in ND? Nope. Do we want another massive oil mistake that could stop fracking completely? Not me. Is there a shortage of profit in the current oil busines? It doesn't look like it. The shoreline in Prince William Sound is still contaminated from Exon Valdez oil. Is that our future?

Sounds like the "states rights" chant. Are sports, families or weather different in Garrison,Kenmare or Velva? Nope. So why not a state rule? Would be easier to schedule sports or any other activity for everyone if all were the same.

School calendars are based on the 180 days concept- Its not a magic number-Start school after Labor day and end before Memorial Day-Public schools required to be open during that period of time-Local districts can do whatever they elect to outside of those limits if they want to--but they are not required to do anything else. Same would apply to private schools for accreditation.

August is the hottest month - end of May and early June are wetter and cooler. Buildings are so hot in August - most school buildings do not have air conditioning and it is hard on the younger students in particular. When I went to school in Minot -many many years ago - we started after Labor Day.
