Shirvani simply had to go

June 4, 2013

It simply had to happen. Monday’s decision by the state Board of Higher Education to end the short tenure of Chancellor Hamid Shirvani was overdue, but welcome nonetheless....

The state Board of Higher Education needs a major overhaul, as they don't seem to be effective. They displayed poor judgement in selecting the candidate, in outlining the job the chancellor was to do, and then not supporting him when, as expected, objections were raised by egotistical leaders protecting their turf.

upset the students? kindof like the tail wagging the dog. He will continue to receive his wages, two more wage increases plus health care for two more years. Not a bad gig if you can get it.

Frank G, you are so right. He was hired to make changes, fix the broken system, and bring our higher ed to a loftier position. Two chancellors ousted within a decade. No one will want to come to this rat's nest. Wonder if Flakoll will get his dream job now?

To bad the board messed around until Shirvani decided it was time to go. In other words, he did the math and decided this would be such a bad idea.

Hard to say how much of the problem was Shirvani, and how much was driven by media constantly calling for his release.

The elephant in the room says the real reason the MDN didn't like him was he wanted Minot State in a different tier than NDSU and UND, which is probably where it belongs anyway because that school serves a different purpose.

I think that the most important items was how he dealt with the college leaders and not the students. But, his administrative talents were on display with his abuse of ND law, his removal of any obstacles to get his way (orchestrating the firing of the attorney that determined the meetings were illegal), and being a general butt-head. I agree with Frank in that the Board needs to go especially the past head of the Board and the new attorney. Shirvani should have been fired for cause. To give him an eight hundred thousand gift to leave is a joke. Let the Board pay for it out of their salaries. Bottom line- get rid of the Board.

Here is the real question. Since he decided to go "on his own", as reported by KX News anyway, WHY are we paying him off? After all, he quit, right?

Shirvani was only "criticized almost from the beginning" by the far righteousness editorial board of this newspaper -- a fact that makes one wonder why the MDN was so immediately dead set against the man.

Who are you kidding mark? He was gracious when he left the last two jobs that sent him on his way, why would it be different here. Good lord, he was inept at everything and you want to make it racist because he was pressured. He should have been fired for being incompetent. Until you have been in the leadership and had to advises an incompetent board of idiots, you need to back off on your judgments. You don't know squat, mark.

Being overpaid is one thing. Giving a "bonus" for leaving earlier under contract is just a sample of the the gouging that is going on for the taxpayer dollars. Your trying to tell me it's a buy-out for good riddance. Under right to work laws employers do not even need to give a reason for dismissal let alone giving an employee money. Its a rap but they forgot the C.
