"We've got some people who can be fairly destructive."

A simple translation:

Shoplifters come in here during the late night hours and rob us blind. Why should we stock shelves to let the thieves come here and take it all as fast as we can stock it? If we just close the doors, the inventory is not depleted by non-sales and we can re-stock the shelves and not have losses as great as they are.

Much closer to the truth.

How can you legally do this when you need one thing open 24 hours seven days a week.....So, we should do away with blue laws then so Wal-Mart can stay open on Saturday past midnight in case there is an emergency......

It's not about whether it it "legal" or not. There is no law that says a business has to stay open24/7. Most smaller communities would be so lucky to have a store open 24 hours a day. As far as influx of people the reason for closing. Williston never had 24 hour grocery stores, and now their Albertson's and Economart are open 24hours. They have a much larger influx of workers, especially Oil Field workers than Minot does. So they can't blame it on Minot's population increase. My guess is they can't find enough workers to fill the night positions, or it is not busy enough during the middle of the night to keep all the stores staffed 24/7. I'm more curious why they don't keep at least one of the stores open 24 hours a day. They don't have to keep them all open. Dan's in Bismarck shuts down one of their stores at midnight each night but leaves the other 2 open. Customers will figure out which stores are open and which are not.
