The war on coal continues

March 12, 2013

The good news about Ernest Moniz, President Barack Obama’s nominee to become secretary of energy, is that he seems bullish about natural gas....

Maybe it is time for PL to move, let's say California. The land of fruits and nuts.

Hope4Change, just keeping track as North Dakota attempts to be the most backwards state in the country, taking first place away from Mississippi.

Just like clockwork, MDN's weekly "Obama's war on coal" editorial. Just a broken record with nothing new to say.

Another thing that gets me on these types of repeating editorials...

Two-thirds of the way down...Is the Industry itself asking for govt. aid in addition to the subsidies it already receives?

Reminds me of an arguement about being too big to fail!

Ripe for Retirement: The Case for Closing America's Costliest Coal Plants As many as 353 coal-fired power generators in 31 states — representing up to 59 GW of power capacity — are no longer economically viable compared with cleaner, more affordable energy sources. The owners of these soon-to-be-retired generators have concluded that paying for costly upgrades to keep their outdated coal plants running is a bad investment— particularly now that there are many cleaner, lower-cost alternatives that can replace old coal units while maintaining the reliability of the electric system

The average taxpayer spent over $521.00 in the last five yrs subsidizing the fossil fuel industry. Roughly $7.21 was spent on alternative energy, ie.. solar, wind & others....

You got your money (our money)..You had your time and did what with it?

Coal is KING... about 55% of our nations electricity comes from coal... not much at all from wind...less than 5% nuclear, gas, oil hydo, geothermal etc make up the rest. take away coal we go in the black, period. All wind does is destabilize the electric grid as it isn't constant so some base loaded plant has to continually chase the effects of the modulating load caused by the fluctuating wind. the best way to fix this problem is to just cut all the government money going into renewables. when they become profitable on their own someone will bring them back. Until then let them die.

Worldview, I like what you say but dislike what you don't say. There is not enough coal seam natural gas to even take into consideration in comparison to the amounts of energy produced by coal. Another not mentioned problem is to get the natural gas out of the coal it still has to be mined and processed and that my friend is one step forward and two steps back. The ND oil fields alone do not have the daily volume of NG needed either so I can see only worse problems and higher prices to pay for them.

If we can go to the moon in 10 years when there was jot a color television???

My gosh what planet are you from? Are you saying there was no color TV in 1969? even 1959?

Must be from the reservation. They went out and bought TVs before they had electricity..

Is anyone going to ask: where would we be if all the money we lost on solar junk had been put into nat gas infrastructure how would life be today? In spite of DC's stupidity the "market" is doing it evidenced by the fact the 18 wheelers are making the switch from diesel cause it makes common capitalistic sense!!! I just love FREE enterprise AND PROFIT. Such cuddly concepts. One just can not have enough oh either!!!!!

We should not wait 25 years. If we can go to the moon in 10 years when there was not a color television than I expect we can do a lot more yet with energy. 25 years would be a maximum I think for getting it together but may be as you indicate realistic. Infrastructure is a will not an obstacale..

Natural Gas is going to make the USA increasingly more competitive and is and advantage only we have. Shale drilling is included in this because as an economic response it is not a tax. It is revenue and it satisfies partial though, not all enviornmental concerns.

Worldview, most of us here are proponents of natural gas and I’m no exception. I would estimate that we are not quite there yet and may take another 25 y. or more to convert coal to natural gas generators. There will be more nat. gas conversions to propane, etcetera and will drive or propel many of our cars too by then.

I suppose you are for ‘cap & trade’ also but will China quite polluting the planet? I don’t think so!
