“I don't have a problem with tougher DUI laws. It's a privilege and a responsibility to drive, and there are others out on the road besides me.” to quote loco and I totally agree.
The laws are very much stricter these days and in the past we probably were all guilty of getting behind the wheel when we should not have. I used to think that seat belt laws were unconstitutional too but now I’ve changed my mind on that one. The human body was not intended to make sudden stops upon impact and cars, planes and falls from a horse are no exception.
Personally I think many people should not be given a drivers license in the first place but that would be unconstitutional also. Cell phone usage should be unlawful also and if you need to use one...pull off on the side of the road and use it. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE WHEN BEHIND THE WHEEL.

Don't let 'em get you down, H4C. For some, help is just a phone call away.
The joke was old, but funny.
I know people who have lost their family members due to DUI accidents. Most of us do, because drinking and driving is so commonplace.
I don't have a problem with tougher DUI laws. It's a privilege and a responsibility to drive, and there are others out on the road besides me.

What is wrong with this reply to dakkratt? Thank you Duracell or Garrfunkel.
Tougher DUI laws necessary February 24, 2013 !!REMOVED FROM SITE!! Let me see, dakkratt how old are you now? When your mental maturity level reaches let's say 5, we'll give it a try. Until then go out on the playground and play with yourself.

I would like to share a personal experience with my closest friends about drinking and driving.
As you well know, some of us have been known to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from the occasional social session - especially during the Holidays. A couple of nights ago I was out for an evening with friends, and had a couple of cocktails and some rather nice red wine.
Knowing full well I may have been slightly over the limit, I did something I've never done before. I took a cab home. And wouldn't you just know it - on the way home I passed a police road block but, since it was a cab, they waved it past.
I arrived home safely and without incident - which was a real surprise because I have never driven a cab before and am not sure where I got it or what to do with it now that it's in my garage.
Be careful out there.

Locomotive, you're right. It was one of Obama's supporters who made the free phones now known as Obama phones.

Ricardo, I believe that the problem with DUI's is the premise of it is okya to drink before you drive as you say "That's not more than a couple of beers after work. And you want these people put in jail" - "for a first offense?" Then you say "Jail is a serious penalty." IF it is truly a serious penalty, then, maybe drinkers will take driving and drinking more seriously to avoid the 'serious penalty" and in the process, save lives.

Y'know, billgrr, if it'll make you happy, we can call them ronnies or poopsies or dillingers or whatever you wants. But after gazing into my own crystal ball, I foresee that nothing much could make you happy, especially if it was done by an E-Vill Republican. (smile)
I was called away from my train of thought and didn't get to say the following...
It isn't correct to call these gov't phones "obamaphones." They are free phones under a program that began before Pres. Obama was even a state senator.
Perhaps one reason the word "obamaphone" came into existence was the video of the woman explaining that she got her phone courtesy of Pres. Obama (as she saw it) while she was demonstrating somewhere before the 2012 election. That video can be googled too, I imagine.

from freegov'tcellphones . net...
"Since this is a federal government-mandated program, the features of each company’s plan is reasonably close to the others, and the qualifications to obtain the phone are uniform from company to company and state to state. You can see how easy it is to qualify for a government phone, either by current participation in a public assistance program, or by your low-income."

Wanting to put more drunks in jails but won't provide any funding for an Expansion of Ward County Jail that is already full??? Posting bail--when? Not sure stiffer penalties will change current culture or be a deterent -it will create more revenue to legal system-

I WAS in a drunken stupor...gots to watch that Koolaid they serve at the Free Lunch Counter Café as they must have really spiked it this time. Being in that stupor DID help while I was waiting in that long government line to get my gifts. The line was extremely long...others must finally be figuring it out that gifts are the way to go.
...I'm going to have to get that "Omama phone" so's I can keep in touch while I'm in line. The one with that internets.

Your editorial says blood alcohol level of more than .18, which probably was an error and should have been reported as .08 or above for DUI violations. That's not more than a couple of beers after work. And you want these people put in jail - for a first offense? Wow. Why don't we just shut this country down and all go to our rooms and wait for our mommies or wives to bring us cookies.
Jail is a serious penalty. It should be a punishment of last resort. The problem is drinking and driving, so take the offender's drivers license away for a period of time. Much longer for a second violation. If they drive under the influence while their license is suspended, then maybe jail time might be in order.
Be reasonable folks. Once a law is passed, it rarely becomes less draconic later; rather it gets more punitive with future changes. If you don't want to live in the land of the "safety above all else" control freaks, now is the time to speak up.
