Postal problems

It pains me to read something from someone who does not know what they are talking about... The Republican controlled Congress passed the Postal Accountability Enhancement Act (PAEA) which pretty much BROKE the USPS as we know it.

Congressional Republicans mandated that within ten years the United States Postal Service would have to fully fund retirement healthcare benefits for the next 75 years.

We should thank the greedy little tea drinkers at Fed-Ex who lobbied Congress with (GIFTS) so that a 230 year old institution would eventually bankrupt itself and open up private capitalistic markets doing the same thing...

One should mention...The USPS was self funded...did not require any tax dollars and had been profitable every day/year until these changes.

lorexxx, when I pick up a Priority Mail box, that's exactly what I use it for: Priority Mail. Those warnings on the box, y'know. Kinda scary.

Besides, if I "agree" to use it only for Priority Mail, I'm going to hold up my end.

I know. I'm a little peculiar about things like that.

No major private-sector corporation or public-sector agency could do that. It’s an untenable demand.

FedEx Corp. LOBBYING: $8,998,500 (2012)

At Fedex (the Post Office delivers more items every day than Fedex does in a whole year) the CEO made over $7,400,000, and at UPS (the Post Office delivers more items each week than UPS does annually) the CEO made $9,500,000...Postmaster General earns $800,000 a year....

Exactly how much $$ could be made from that piece of apple pie loco?

Veritas, if you want me to think by this post that you are pro-public and anti-private shipping businesses, it couldn't be more clear.

I use whatever service is best for me, by looking at the bottom-dollar, location, simplicity, etc. Just normal private business decision-making. I like USPS for many shipping needs.

You do realize that non-profit organizations lobby for federal dollars, and many of them are liberal? Would those all get a pass from you, because of their non-profit status, political leanings and/or good intentions?

Is it really that hard for you wingers to look up the facts or will you heads swivel around and around? Veritas is completely correct. The Republicans voted the retirement thing in to help the independents(UPS/FedX) that contribute to their campaigns. So, what else is new. Without this garbage rule, the post office would be fine. Thank you Republican party. Let do more for your party and less for the country. Oh, right wing publications are not valid sources.

Yet too many people mistakenly assume that it is illegal for non-profits to lobby. To the contrary, federal laws actually exist to encourage charities to lobby within certain specified limits. Knowing what constitutes lobbying under the law, and what the limits are, is the key to being able to lobby legally and safely."

I found out that private foundations can't lobby, but "...foundations can communicate with government officials in ways that do not constitute lobbying. IRS lobbying regulations also allow private foundations, without penalty, to make general support grants to publicly supported charities that do some lobbying, provided the grant is not earmarked for lobbying purposes."

As far as spinno, you aren't guilty? What about the "apple pie" posts this weekend? They weren't much related to what I'd brought up, but seem to qualify under what you're claiming about me.

I figure bring out whatever's in the pantry for the meal at hand. It looked like you needed something to balance your standard Republican fare. Howzabout that non-profit stuff? Relishing? Not spicy enough?

Could we find something else for you concerning "greed, the (Democrat) Party and not what's wrong with government but what's wrong with people?"

I feel we need to add lots of taxes to the internets....and give the money to the Postal service. As this internet is the demon causing the failure of our post office.

And if we collect enough, we can add more postal workers, would be a boon to lowering the unemployment rates...I would even give the workers a 20 hour week with the same yearly pay, and full benefits.

Internet taxes for the postal service is just a start...there are lots more our government could fix with high internet tax.

Why can't we just all come together to fix what's wrong with America?

The U.S. Postal Service said its net loss last year widened to $15.9 billion, more than the $15 billion it had projected, as mail volume continued to drop, falling 5 percent.

How many years has this been happening and why does it continue to operate in this way? Don’t look to liberals for answers or solutions to this one. Just print more dollars and Forever Stamps, ought to do it till next year, when the pattern repeats itself

The post office should do away with the pension plan for all new hires like 98% of the rest of American companies. Contribute to the 401K program of retirees and leave it at that. Reduce the salaries of the ceo and top mangagers, if they leave? oh well, lots of people job hunting out there, can't do much worse. We could always give the mail to that religious group that knocks on my door all the time. They could deliver the mail at the same time.
