Roy E. Johnson

Mr. Roy Johnson: I am proud to say I served with Roy on the Fleet Ballistic Submarine USS George Washington Carver SSBN 656 *******en.wikipedia****/wiki/File:Uss_george_washington_carve.jpg during the cold war back in the late 1960’s. Roy was a nuclear trained Leading Machinist Mate of the highest caliber. Roy was well known for his high spiritedness and extremely high intelligence. It was often stated that Roy was one of the most intelligent men on the submarine with an incredible knowledge base, IQ and memory for most anything. You could ask Roy anything and he would know the answer. Everyone liked him very much. One morning very early around 2:00 AM our submarine was tied outboard number three of two other submarines of the submarine tender in Rota, Spain harbor. I had the topside watch when Roy was coming back from off duty Liberty on the beach/in town. I was convinced he was going to throw me overboard before he went below decks as he was full of fun and jokes.

Mr. Roy Johnson: continued .. Needless to say I was glad when Roy decided to let me go. It is hard to put into words the admiration and respect our Submarine brethren have for Roy. Roy was a man’s man. He seemed to always have life all figured out. Ship your oars Roy and rest in peace. I will see you again.
