PARSHALL – Shortly after Chief Joseph and the leaders of his captive band of Nez Perce were escorted by the U.S. Army and General Nelson Miles to the booming Dakota Territory town of Bismarck, leading citizens within the city invited Joseph and his fellow chiefs to a banquet. The lavish affair was held at Bismarck’s fancy Sheridan House hotel.
Joseph, who had led the Nez Perce from the West Coast, through the rugged country near present day Yellowstone Park and then to within a few miles of the Canadian border, finally surrendered with the famous words, “Hear me my chiefs. I am tired. From where the sun now stands, I shall fight no more forever.
