SURREY — Not much was working early on for Surrey Blue Sox pitcher Brady Schwan. But everything was working for him late. After allowing five hits and four runs through the first two innings, Schwan shut out the Minot Metros while allowing just two hits the rest of the way to lead the Blue Sox in a 10-4 win in the first game of a Section 5 Class B American Legion Baseball game Wednesday. Schwan, 16, finished with 10 strikeouts and said the key to his improvement in the later innings was his use of off-speed pitches. “The first time through (the lineup) I threw mostly fastballs, but that wasn’t working,” he said. “Then I went to the off-speed stuff and that seemed to work better. I just couldn’t throw it past them.” Schwan also had a big day at the plate as he provided a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. His bomb to right field put Surrey ahead 5-4 and came during a five-run fifth. “That one really felt good.

Vistas split with Grand Forks
GRAND FORKS — Ryan Bollinger allowed just five hits and one run as he led the Minot Vistas to a 4-1 win over Grand Forks Royals in the first game of an American Legion Baseball doubleheader Wednesday.
Keybirds sweep

Larson memorial board raised at Corbett Field
Longtime local baseball and softball umpire Bobby Larson was remembered at Corbett Field Tuesday with the hanging of a memorial board sign on the outfield wall.
Larson died in the winter of 2008 after a battle with cancer.
Reps hit for sweep
Every time the Bismarck Reps needed a timely hit, they found it.
The Reps collected eight hits and scored eight runs in the final two innings to earn a two-game sweep of the Minot Metros Monday at Corbett Field.
