RUGBY — Rugby still reigns in Region 6 track and field.
Over the past few years, Rugby’s girls and boys teams have had a stranglehold over the region track and field meet, winning nine of the last 10 team titles. The trend continued Saturday at Johnsen Field.
Led by Vanessa Friestad’s three individual event wins, Rugby’s girls took the team title with 238.5 points. Rugby senior Reed Duchscher set a meet record in the javelin as the boys won the team title with a score of 237.33.
“I actually thinks it’s one of those things where success breeds success,” said Rugby head coach Scott Grochow, who was named the region’s boys coach of the year. “They see the kids in front of them and we get a lot of our former athletes to come back and help us when college is up. I think that inspires the kids.
