Lawmakers shouldn't be in a hurry
Hanging three or four ornaments on a dead piece of shrubbery does not make it a Christmas tree, even if President Barack Obama says it is. That is what the president did last week in announcing a “new” health care overhaul proposal. Obama’s claim to be working with Republicans to craft a sensible health care policy is no more than politics as usual, as is most of the rhetoric coming from the Republicans. Members of Congress, both Democrat and Republican, should not be in any hurry to vote on the massive health care bill. Thoughtful lawmakers will realize that the public wanted real change, not the minor tinkering Obama has done with a health care proposal disliked by most Americans. If this plan is so great, why are supporters trying to ram it through before anyone has a chance to study it? Obama has listened to some ideas presented by Republican lawmakers and has grafted a few of them onto his health care proposal.
