GRANT APPLICATIONS: Power of the Purse in Minot is now accepting grant applications with an emphasis on benefiting women's and children's programs and services in Minot. Power of the Purse is an affiliate of Minot Area Community Foundation that began in August 2007. The mission is to create a powerful leadership network of women who strengthen our community through a focused investment of their time, talent and treasure. They are looking to fund projects that: Meet PoP's mission: a program that directly benefits people in need; Have a specific project or program for which funding is being requested; and have clear goals, objectives, and measurable outcomes. GARAGE SALE DONATIONS NEEDED: Souris Valley Animal Shelter in Minot is now collecting items through July 14 for its annual fundraising garage sale Aug. 7-8 at the shelter. Clean, useable items are needed but clothing and stuffed animals are not being accepted. People should bring items to the shelter at 1935-20th Ave. SE and ask for assistance. ANAMOOSE EVENTS: The Anamoose "Market in the Park" program will start July 6 and will be Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be dollar hamburgers the first Monday of each month. Vendors will sell vegetables, crafts and baked goods.
MSU GOLF TOUR: The tentative schedule for Minot State University's fourth annual "Summer Friend-Raising Golf Tour" follows: Bottineau July 7, Hazen July 15, Washburn July 21 and Kenmare Aug. 6. Anyone may attend. Registration for the four-person, nine-hole scramble is at 4:30 p.m., with a shotgun start at 5 p.m. A social follows about 7 p.m. Prizes are awarded. Golfers pay their own green fees and cart rentals. Meals and refreshments will be provided by the course and purchase is optional. Transportation from MSU to each course will be available for free. Reservations for transportation and meals are requested one week before the date of each outing. Golfers interested in carts should make cart reservations because the number of carts is limited. AREA BLOOD DRIVES: United Blood Services of Minot has numerous blood drives in July. Appointments to donate blood should be made ahead of time. PANGEA HOUSE EVENTS: Several events are planned in July and August at the Pangea House in Minot. Performances are from about 6 to 10 p.m. at 109 W. Central Ave., downtown Minot. Events are set for July 8, 16, 20 and 30 and Aug. 7, 10, 19 and 26. The program July 8 will be Micah's Soapbox, a storytelling event where all participate. The program July 16 will be performances by Wingnut Dishwashers Union, Father, Son, and Holy Smokes and Locals. The program July 29 will be performances by PH w/ Fleabag, Wildcat Revival, and Locals. The program July 30 will be performances by Ph w/ Unicorn Basement, Kittens Forever, Swallowed Up and Locals. Pangea House is a local music venue and community center which hosts events.
BOTTINEAU CHAUTAUQUA: The Bottineau Technology Center will host Chautauqua Reading Group Discussions moderated by Gary Albrightson and Mike Porter of Minot State University-Bottineau July 8, 15 and 22 at 7 p.m. in preparation for the 2009 Everett Albers Chautauqua, "Lincoln, Land, and Liberty," which is coming to Bottineau July 27-29. Chautauqua is a program of the North Dakota Humanities Council and sponsors include MSU-Bottineau, Bottineau Community Theatre and the Bottineau County Economic Development Corp. TEEN PROGRAM: The Minot Public Library will have a program for teens, Improv Anyone?, July 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the library's South Meeting Room. UNIVERSITY SUMMER THEATER: The Minot State University Summer Theatre will present "The Odd Couple" July 9-13; and "Sweet Charity" July 21-26 at the MSU Amphitheater. All shows will be at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults; $7 for senior citizens and children over age 12; $5 for children ages 12 and under; and $3 for MSU personnel and summer students with a current MSU identification card. KENMARE SILENT AUCTION/BARBECUE: The Kenmare Association of Commerce is sponsoring the Inaugural Kbay Silent Auction and City-wide Barbecue July 9 in the Kenmare City Square Park. The event is free and open to the public. Joe's Karaoke will provide music. Kenmare area businesses will have bidding items and sheets in their businesses for bidding now until July 9. Events begin at 5 p.m. with open bidding on auction items and packages continuing until 6:30 p.m. Hamburgers, hotdogs, beans, a beverage and ice cream bars will be served at 6 p.m. Auction winners will be announced at 7 p.m.
GARAGE SALE FUNDRAISER: The Omicron Tau Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Minot, will hold a garage sale fundraiser and bake sale July 10 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and July 11 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2218 Academy Road, northwest Minot. Proceeds will go toward Omicron Tau Chapter's global health service project trip to Tanzania, Africa, Dec. 30 through Jan. 11. The purpose is to volunteer assistance and bring needed medical supplies to hospices, hospitals and clinics affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania and the Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa.
FUNDRAISING GOLF SCRAMBLE: A Minot area ministry, the Northwest Chapter of Child Evangelism Fellowship, will host a four-person golf scramble, the Micah Erickson Memorial Golf Classic, July 11 at 9 a.m. at The Links of North Dakota, south of Ray. Team registration will be a freewill donation to be used by Child Evangelism Fellowship to help cover this summer's expenses for ministering to children in northwest North Dakota. GRANT INFORMATION: Kief Schladweiler from the Foundation Center grant program in New York City will offer a free program July 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Minot Public Library's North Community Room. He will cover the Foundation Center Online, a source for grants for non-profit organizations, and the resources on the Foundation Center's Web site. NEW TOWN SUMMER CELEBRATION: The Reunion at the Home of Sakakawea New Town Summer Celebration will be July 11 in New Town. The Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Earth Lodge Village will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Arts in the Park will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a Kids Corner from 10 a.m. to noon. The art project will cost $2. Lenny the Clown will be there from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A pie and ice cream social will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church in New Town. A parade will be at 1 p.m., with a car and motorcycle show from 2 to 5 p.m. There is no entry fee for the parade or car and motorcycle show. A pig roast will be at 5 p.m. An auction of flower pots will be at 6:30 p.m. and a dance with music by Dakota Rose Dance Band will be from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the New Town Civic Center. People should bring their own lawn chair to the events, which are sponsored by the New Town Chamber of Commerce.
MOTORCYCLE RUN FUNDRAISER: The Souris Valley Animal Shelter in Minot will hold a fundraiser, the Run for the Rascals Motorcycle Run, July 12. Registration will be from noon to 1 p.m. and the run will start at the shelter at 1935-20th Ave. SE and will go for 125 miles, ending up in Oak Park in Minot for a picnic. People who preregister may enter for $10. Registration the day of the event is $15. Call Susan at 839-6770 to preregister.
TEEN PROGRAM: The Minot Public Library will have a Gaming Tournament for teens July 13 at 11 a.m. in the library's North Meeting Room. RAILROAD RETIREMENT INFORMATION: A U.S. Railroad Retirement Board representative will be in Minot July 14 at 3 pm. in the Federal Building, 100-1st St. SW, Room B-7. The board is a federal agency which administers the Railroad Retirement and Railroad Unemployment Insurance Acts. Those with appointments will be assisted first. Those without appointments will be assisted as time permits. Call the board in Fargo at 239-5117 to make an appointment.
WINE TASTING FUNDRAISER: The Wild About Wines Wine Tasting at the Zoo fundraiser will be July 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. in Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot. There will be wine sampling stations, a silent auction, hors d'oeuvres, music by a disc jockey and animal vists. People must be age 21 or older to attend. The cost is $20 per person. Tickets are available at the Broadway Miracle Mart service counter, at the zoo or at the gate. Miracle Mart is sponsoring the fundraiser. Proceeds will benefit the Greater Minot Zoological Society. CELL PHONES RECYCLING: Easter Seals Goodwill ND, Inc. in Minot is collecting used cell phones Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the local office, 800-12th Ave. SW. Easter Seals Goodwill will be paid for each cell phone sent to Absolute Communications for recycling. Phones that are donated will be cleaned and given to agencies that need them.
STATE FAIR CONCERT TICKETS: North Dakota State Fair Grandstand Show Passes for the country music concerts and tickets for the fair's two rock music acts are on sale now. Grandstand Showpasses are $65 for general admission and $75 for reserved seats. The showpass includes: the Taylor Swift concert July 25; the Rodney Atkins and Heidi Newfield Concert July 26; the Enduro Race July 27; the Demolition Derby July 28; the Devonshires and Classic Car Show July 29; the Gary Allan Concert July 30; and the Dierks Bentley Concert July 31. General admission tickets for Motley Crue July 24 are $45. General admission tickets for Good Charlotte Aug. 1 are $25 with $5 off with a Coke UPC label. SESAME STREET PLAY: Three live performances of Sesame Street's "Elmo's Green Thumb" will be Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. and Aug. 5 at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the Bismarck Civic Center. The cost is $11 or $15 with a $2 facility fee added to all ticket prices. Tickets may be charged by phone by calling 1-800-745-3000.

The Aug. 26 program will include performances by Uh- Oh! and locals. Pangea House is a local music venue and community center which hosts a variety of events.
TOMATO FESTIVAL: The Great Tomato Festival Fundraiser will be Aug. 12 at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds. The Taube Museum of Art in downtown Minot is the recipient this year. If you would like to get more involved, or would like more information, contact the museum at 838-4445.
OUR LADY OF GRACE INFORMATION: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Minot will celebrate its 50th year anniversary this summer. If you are a charter member or know of someone who is, call 240-5303. The church is preparing a roster of its charter members and would like to include all charter members.
CPR CLASS: The Minot Family YMCA offers a CPR-PR course the second Saturday of each month. The cost for the class is $75. People must preregister for the class. Call the Y at 852-0141 for preregistration information.
GARRISON DAM TOURS: Scheduled tours of the Garrison Dam Power Plant will be given to large groups Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Tours will include the generator floor, turbines, penstocks and tailrace areas. LIBRARY HOME DELIVERY: The Minot Public Library offers home delivery through the library's Special Services Program. The program is for people who are homebound, who have a visual or physical disability or who live in a nursing home or assisted living center. The collection includes books in regular or large print format and audiobooks on cassette and compact disks and music CDs or cassettes. Call Kathy or Jeanne at 852-1045 for more information.
ART NEEDED: Individuals or organizations with information, art or collections to share are encouraged to contact the Minot Public Library about lobby display.
CLUBS DIRECTORY: The 28th edition of the Clubs and Organizations Directory is available for the public for $3 per directory. The directory lists clubs and organizations including human service agencies in the Minot area, contact persons, with addresses and phone numbers. People may purchase the directory at the Minot Public Library's Information and Referral Center Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The directory is published annually. Club presidents and members are asked to submit updated information for the 29th edition of the directory, which will be published later. Additional information is also available from that office including meeting room availability in the Minot area, day-care center listings, library and community happenings and consumer information.
INFORMATION SERVICES: The Information and Referral office is an information service provided by the Minot Public Library. The mission of the office is to gather information of vital concern and to provide the information to those who need it. The primary function is to link people in need of information with the appropriate organization or agency that can meet their needs. DRIVERS NEEDED: The North Dakota Association for the Disabled in Minot needs drivers to transport individuals to out-of-town medical appointments. Drivers would use their own vehicles and would get mileage reimbursement. A van accessible for transporting people with handicaps is also available for some appointments. WISH LIST: The 2nd Story Social Club has a wish list of items needed. Those who would like to donate may bring monetary donations, bingo prizes, paper towels, plastic silverware, paper plates, tissues, toilet paper, Styrofoam cups, napkins, coffee filters, hand soap, pool cues, envelopes, cleaning supplies, dish soap, air freshener, 13 gallon garbage bags, healthy snacks, frozen pizza, cookies, bars, coffee and pop, CDs and DVDs. The club is located at 13-1st Ave. SW. The best time to drop off donations is weekdays after 5 p.m. or on the weekends. 2nd Story is a social club for adults with developmental disabilities. The club is now accessible for those with handicaps.

ATHLETIC HONORS BANQUET: The Minot High School Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet will be Oct. 3 in the MHS-Magic City Campus Commons Area. A social will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Seven former athletes, John Apland, Ed Bergeron, David Zimmerman, Chris Stone, Tina Faydo Rodgers, Shelley Berg and Don Tyner; one coach, Steve Carver; and two contributors, Herb Johnson and Dick Sharp, both for hockey, will be inducted into the MHS Athletic Hall of Fame. The banquet is open to the public. Tickets will be available the first part of September at the Athletic Director's Office in the Minot Public Schools Administration Building and at the finance offices of Magic City Campus and MHS-Central Campus.
RAILROAD MUSEUM RECYCLING: The Railroad Museum of Minot is asking people to bring their recyclable materials to the museum any Saturday or call the museum at 852-7091 so someone can pick up the materials. The museum is collecting paper and metals, including aluminum beverage cans. Recycling money will be used for projects at the museum.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Rehab Services Inc. in Minot is seeking volunteers for its newest program called Recoveree Connection. Volunteers provide telephone support for North Dakotans in drug and alcohol recovery. Volunteers should have experience in the recovery process. RAILROAD SAFETY VOLUNTEERS: North Dakota Operation Lifesaver is seeking passionate volunteers to help spread their message about railroad safety. N.D. Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit public information and safety education program dedicated to eliminating collisions, deaths, and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights-of-way. CHILD-CARE HELP: Are you looking for child care for your infant, preschool or school-age child? Child Care Resource and Referral can assist you in evaluating your child-care needs and give you a customized list of available child-care providers in your area. LITERACY FUNDRAISER: The Minot Adult Literacy Volunteers organization is collecting used books, cell phones and inkjet cartridges as part of an ongoing fundraising effort. People may drop these items off at a collection center inside the Minot Adult Learning Center at 1609-4th Ave. NW.
MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS: The Minot Commission on Aging needs volunteers to assist with preparing for Meals on Wheels delivery from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and also needs volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels starting at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. If you are willing to give a few hours during the week or just a day every so often, please call 852-0561 for more information.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PANTRY, CLOTHING CENTERS: Volunteers are needed to work in the food and clothing pantry of Faith United Methodist Church. The pantry is open Mondays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. For more information and to volunteer, call the church at 838-1540. The Seventh-day Adventist Church's Clothing Center in the church at 1624 S. Main St. is now open Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch 2nd Chance Thrift Store in Minot needs volunteers to help with organizing clothes, hanging and tagging clothes, helping maintain store appearance, filling shelves and straightening the sales floor and helping out where needed. HISTORICAL VOLUNTEERS: The Ward County Historical Society needs volunteers to help with the collection, archives and research center. BUSINESS PROGRAM: The Minot Service Corps of Retired Executives office at 1925 S. Broadway is staffed by SCORE counselors every Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. Individuals may visit with SCORE members to learn about SCORE and/or to receive information about their business venture. COMPANIONS FOR CHILDREN: Companions for Children matches adult volunteers with youth from single-parent homes for friendship, fun and extra adult companionship. Openings are available for adults interested in volunteering. Call 838-5784 for information.
TOUR GUIDES NEEDED: The Scandinavian Heritage Association is looking for volunteers to guide visitors through the Scandinavian Heritage Park in Minot and to explain the buildings and uses to visitors. Interested persons should call Jeanne at 852-9161.
MENTORING PROGRAM: The YWCA Minot is looking for mentors (male and female) for its mentoring program for youth ages 14-18. Call 838-1812 for more information.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Mid-Dakota Chapter of the American Red Cross needs volunteers to staff the phone lines. The chapter is taking calls as part of the Response Center Network. Within hours of a major disaster, the American public can get immediate disaster-related assistance by calling the Red Cross GET-INFO line. Call 852-2828 to become a volunteer.
VOLUNTEERS AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Volunteers for Mouse River Players Community Theatre are needed throughout the year for lights, costumes, makeup, set design and other tasks. People interested in volunteering should call the Mouse River Players' office at 838-3939. The theater also needs basic construction tools including hammers, screwdrivers, saws, table saws, a miter saw, painting brushes and rollers, flat white paint and shelving units.
SENIOR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: If you are age 55 or over, you are invited to join the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. RSVP offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities where you can make a difference in the community where you live.
