ANNOUNCEMENTS
ANAMOOSE EVENTS: The Anamoose "Market in the Park" program will be Mondays throughout the summer from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be dollar hamburgers the first Monday of each month. Vendors will sell vegetables, crafts and baked goods.
TEEN PROGRAM: The Minot Public Library will have a program for teens, Writing Workshop, July 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the library's North Meeting Room. Teens will start with an art print and create a story about what it is like to be in that print. Minot High School-Central Campus English Teacher Eileen Dolan Gillund will present the program. AREA BLOOD DRIVES: United Blood Services of Minot has numerous blood drives in July. Appointments to donate blood should be made ahead of time. PANGEA HOUSE EVENTS: Several events are planned in July and August at the Pangea House in Minot. Performances are from about 6 to 10 p.m. at 109 W. Central Ave., downtown Minot. Events are set for July 30 and Aug. 7, 10, 19 and 26. The program July 30 will be performances by Ph w/ Unicorn Basement, Kittens Forever, Swallowed Up and Locals. Pangea House is a local music venue and community center which hosts events.
WILLISTON GARDEN PARTY FUNDRAISER: Mercy Medical Center in Williston will sponsor a Garden Party and Bonus Garden Tour July 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. The Garden Party will be at the home of James and Loyce Rauser, 819-12th St. W., Williston. There will be treats, a silent auction and prize drawings. The bonus gardens will be available for viewing from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The silent auction will end at 8:45 p.m. Tickets will not sold but a freewill offering will be taken. Proceeds will go toward an additional blood pressure monitor for the Leonard P. Nelson Cancer Center at Mercy Hospital in Williston.
MASTER GARDENER PROGRAM: The preregistration deadline is July 31 to participate in the Master Gardener Program offered by the NDSU Extension office, Ward County. The program will be held Friday mornings Aug. 28 until Oct. 16 at North Central Research Extension Center south of Minot. Sessions will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 12:30 p.m. The cost of the program is $100 for volunteers and $200 for non-volunteers. The volunteers will be asked to do 48 hours of volunteer work to compensate this master gardener requirement. The program will include information on flowers, vegetables, lawn care, trees, shrubs and fruit production. Preregistration should be sent to the NDSU Department of Plant Sciences, Dept. 7670, P.O. BUFFALO HISTORY DISCUSSION: A "Buffalo in Peril" panel discussion will be Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. at Williston State College. Panel members will discuss the impact upon and demise of the buffalo during the 19th century American West. Panelists will include Plains Indian culture authority Larry Belitz; William Dobak, army historian at the Army Center for Military History; Jerome Kills Small, storyteller and Lakota language teacher at the University of South Dakota; and Joe McGeshick, who has taught American Indian studies at the high school and university levels. Greg Hennessy, president of the Friends of Fort Union/Fort Buford will moderate the event. The event is free and open to the public.
INDIAN ARTS SHOWCASE: Jerome Kills Small, storyteller and Lakota language teacher, will headline the Indian Arts Showcase Aug. 1-2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site near Williston. The event is free. Kills Small presents workshops at the University of South Dakota, Vermilion. He will perform daily at 3 p.m. Alysa Albert, Miss Indian Nation 2009, Fort Berthold, will present Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1 p.m. The Eagle Feather dancers from Fort Berthold and the Ta-tanka Oyate singers from Fort Peck will perform both afternoons and several Indian artists will give demonstrations on various arts and crafts.
BURLINGTON POTLUCK PICNIC: The Ward County Old Settlers Association will have a potluck picnic Aug. 2 at 1 p.m. at the Burlington Senior Center. Chicken, coffee, pop, water, dishes and eating utensils will be provided by the association. All members, prospective members and other interested people are encouraged to attend and are asked to bring a side dish to share. There will be a short business meeting after the meal and an opportunity to pay yearly dues of $2 per year. Call 852-2748 for more information.
DOUGLAS PICNIC: The 34th Annual Douglas Community and School Reunion Picnic will be Aug. 2 in the Douglas Senior Center. The potluck picnic will begin at 12:30 p.m. The committee will provide plates, utensils and beverage. A business meeting and entertainment will follow. Election of officers will be held for vice chairman, secretary-treasurer and nominating committee. JACOBSON BENEFIT IN HARVEY: A Benefit Pancake and Sausage Breakfast for Erin (Sys) and Pete Jacobson of Harvey will be Aug. 2 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Harvey Armory in Harvey. Erin is formerly of Minot. Pete is receiving treatment at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis for a large mass in his brain. The benefit will help defray medical costs and is sponsored by Mike's Music Softball Team and Kids RUs Daycare, both Harvey. Donations may also be mailed to: Erin and Pete Jacobson Fund, First International Bank, 910 Lincoln Ave., Harvey, ND 58341. Matching funds will be provided by Thrivent Financial in Harvey.
ART CAMP: A children's Space and Art Camp will be Aug. 3-6 in the Taube Museum of Art, downtown Minot, 2 N. Main St. Children will create aliens, rockets, their own planet and learn about the artist Van Gogh. The art camp is for children ages 4 and older. Call 838-4445 for preregistration information.
SESAME STREET PLAY: Three live performances of Sesame Street's "Elmo's Green Thumb" will be Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. and Aug. 5 at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the Bismarck Civic Center. The cost is $11 or $15 with a $2 facility fee added to all ticket prices. Tickets may be charged by phone by calling 1-800-745-3000.

The program Aug. 7 will be performances by Johnny Sizzle and Locals. On Aug. 10 The Missoula Oblongata Traveling Playwrights will perform, The Aug. 19 program will incude performances by MDC Punk rock legends and locals. The Aug. 26 program will include performances by Uh- Oh! and locals. Pangea House is a local music venue and community center which hosts a variety of events.
PEACE GARDEN RELAY FOR LIFE: The Seventh Annual International Peace Garden Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society will begin Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. and continue until 7 a.m. Aug. 8 in the Peace Garden near Dunseith. The relay is a celebration of survival and a tribute to the lives of loved ones who have been touched by cancer. Twelve hours of fun, friendship and fundraising will take place in the Formal Garden. NEW TOWN MEMORIAL RUN: The Inaugural Bruce Hall Memorial Run will be Aug. 9 in New Town. Races will be held during the New Town Little Shell Powwow, four miles west of New Town. Registration will be at 9 a.m. at the A-frame building. Divisions are: kindergarten through second grade 400 meter run; third and fourth grade 800 meter run; fifth and sixth grade one-mile run; seventh, eighth and ninth grade two-mile run; and the 10K run, an open division. Trophies will be given to the top three finishers in each division. The open division winner will receive a cash award. All runners will receive T-shirts. HABITATS WORKSHOP FOR EDUCATORS: Aug. 10 is the deadline to preregister for the habitats workshop for educators, A Visual Arts Approach, Aug. 19-20 at the North Dakota Game and Fish Department headquarters in Bismarck. The workshop is for teachers, environmental educators or anyone who works with youth. The five North Dakota habitats, wetlands, Badlands, prairie, woodlands and Riparian, will be studied. No previous art experience is needed. All supplies will be provided. The workshop is sponsored by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, the Bismarck Art and Galleries Association and the North Dakota Chapter of the Wildlife Society. The cost is $30 and graduate credit is available from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. GIRL SCOUT CAMP: Girls in kindergarten through fifth grade may attend Girl Scouts Dakota Horizons for Anishinabe Cultural Camp Aug. 11-12 in Belcourt. Girls in kindergarten and first grade may attend Aug. 11 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Girls in second through fifth grade may overnight Aug. 11. Girls will learn cultural history, make fry bread, create beading and more. Meals will be provided. Free busing will be provided from Minot, Surrey, Granville , Towner, Rugby and Dunseith. SINGERS WANTED: The Minot Chamber Chorale is now seeking singers for the upcoming season. The Chorale was founded more than 30 years ago and is the only mixed community choir in Minot. Singers make a commitment to perform in four concerts each season including a Fall Pops Concert, Renaissance Christmas Feast, Classical Works Concert and Spring Sampler Concert and Ice Cream Social. GRANT APPLICATIONS: Power of the Purse in Minot is now accepting grant applications with an emphasis on benefiting women's and children's programs and services in Minot. Power of the Purse is an affiliate of Minot Area Community Foundation that began in August 2007. The mission is to create a powerful leadership network of women who strengthen our community through a focused investment of their time, talent and treasure. They are looking to fund projects that: Meet PoP's mission: a program that directly benefits people in need; Have a specific project or program for which funding is being requested; and have clear goals, objectives, and measurable outcomes. COOKING/BAKING CONTEST: Entry forms are now available for the "Cooking or Baking With Garlic or Wine Contest" Sept. 19 in Minot. The baked or cooked items need to include the use of garlic or grapes. The registration deadline is Sept. 17 for the contest, which will be part of events at the Souris Valley Garlic and Grape Festival in the Minot Municipal Auditorium. Judging for the "Cooking or Baking With Garlic or Wine Contest" will be Sept. 19 at 11:45 a.m. in the auditorium. The festival is hosting the event in conjunction with Gourmet Chef and the NDSU Extension Service-Ward County office. Other sponsors are the Minot Lions Club, Magic City Lions Club, Plum Valley Lions Club, Sawyer Lions Club and the Garrison Lions Club. The $10 registration fee will be donated to North Dakota Lions Sight Programs. LABOR DAY THEATER: Mouse River Players Community Theatre will be reviving "The Last of the Minot Flappers," Sept. 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. in the Arlene Saugstad Theater, downtown Minot, 115-1st St. SE. There will be a historical presentation an hour before each show. The historical play about Minot is back by popular demand. "The Last of the Minot Flappers" is local author Ron Fischer's original script set in Minot's "Little Chicago" area during the days of Prohibition. Tickets are all $10 each. Reservations are needed as space is limited and the show sold out when it was presented last March. The opening day for the reservation line is Aug. 24. INDEPENDENT LIVING FAIR: An Independent Living Fair will be Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Minot Municipal Auditorium Armory. The event is sponsored by Independence Inc., Resource center for Independent Living, Minot, and the Minot Commission on Aging. There will be more than 30 exhibitors who will showcase products, services and resources that enhance personal independence and promote an active lifestyle for people with disabilities and aging adults. Information will be provided about hearing/vision aids, lift chairs, health, nutrition, assistive technology, mobility aids, homecare providers, home accessibility products, modifications and repairs, Social Security benefits, social clubs, transportation and more. AIR SHOW: An air show featuring Minot area pilots and the Canadian Forces Snowbirds will be Sept. 26-27 in Sidney, Mont. Gates open at 9 a.m. MST both days, and the show will start at 1 p.m. MST at the Sidney Airport. Performers will also include Warren and Kent Pietsch, Minot, and there will also be military fly bys.
CELL PHONES RECYCLING: Easter Seals Goodwill ND, Inc. in Minot is collecting used cell phones Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the local office, 800-12th Ave. SW. Easter Seals Goodwill will be paid for each cell phone sent to Absolute Communications for recycling. Phones that are donated will be cleaned and given to agencies that need them.
CPR CLASS: The Minot Family YMCA offers a CPR-PR course the second Saturday of each month. The cost for the class is $75. People must preregister for the class. Call the Y at 852-0141 for preregistration information.
GARRISON DAM TOURS: Scheduled tours of the Garrison Dam Power Plant will be given to large groups Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Tours will include the generator floor, turbines, penstocks and tailrace areas. LIBRARY HOME DELIVERY: The Minot Public Library offers home delivery through the library's Special Services Program. The program is for people who are homebound, who have a visual or physical disability or who live in a nursing home or assisted living center. The collection includes books in regular or large print format and audiobooks on cassette and compact disks and music CDs or cassettes. Call Lacey or Jeanne at 852-1045 for more information.
ART NEEDED: Individuals or organizations with information, art or collections to share are encouraged to contact the Minot Public Library about lobby display.
CLUBS DIRECTORY: The 28th edition of the Clubs and Organizations Directory is available for the public for $3 per directory. The directory lists clubs and organizations including human service agencies in the Minot area, contact persons, with addresses and phone numbers. People may purchase the directory at the Minot Public Library's Information and Referral Center Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The directory is published annually. Club presidents and members are asked to submit updated information for the 29th edition of the directory, which will be published later. Additional information is also available from that office including meeting room availability in the Minot area, day-care center listings, library and community happenings and consumer information.
INFORMATION SERVICES: The Information and Referral office is an information service provided by the Minot Public Library. The mission of the office is to gather information of vital concern and to provide the information to those who need it. The primary function is to link people in need of information with the appropriate organization or agency that can meet their needs. DRIVERS NEEDED: The North Dakota Association for the Disabled in Minot needs drivers to transport individuals to out-of-town medical appointments. Drivers would use their own vehicles and would get mileage reimbursement. A van accessible for transporting people with handicaps is also available for some appointments. WISH LIST: The 2nd Story Social Club has a wish list of items needed. Those who would like to donate may bring monetary donations, bingo prizes, paper towels, plastic silverware, paper plates, tissues, toilet paper, Styrofoam cups, napkins, coffee filters, hand soap, pool cues, envelopes, cleaning supplies, dish soap, air freshener, 13 gallon garbage bags, healthy snacks, frozen pizza, cookies, bars, coffee and pop, CDs and DVDs. The club is located at 13-1st Ave. SW. The best time to drop off donations is weekdays after 5 p.m. or on the weekends. 2nd Story is a social club for adults with developmental disabilities. The club is now accessible for those with handicaps.
HOSTFEST TICKETS: Tickets are now on sale for The Norsk Hostfest Sept. 29-Oct. 3 in Minot. ATHLETIC HONORS BANQUET: The Minot High School Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet will be Oct. 3 in the MHS-Magic City Campus Commons Area. A social will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Seven former athletes, John Apland, Ed Bergeron, David Zimmerman, Chris Stone, Tina Faydo Rodgers, Shelley Berg and Don Tyner; one coach, Steve Carver; and two contributors, Herb Johnson and Dick Sharp, both for hockey, will be inducted into the MHS Athletic Hall of Fame. The banquet is open to the public. Tickets will be available the first part of September at the Athletic Director's Office in the Minot Public Schools Administration Building and at the finance offices of Magic City Campus and MHS-Central Campus.
RAILROAD MUSEUM RECYCLING: The Railroad Museum of Minot is asking people to bring their recyclable materials to the museum any Saturday or call the museum at 852-7091 so someone can pick up the materials. The museum is collecting paper and metals, including aluminum beverage cans. Recycling money will be used for projects at the museum.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Rehab Services Inc. in Minot is seeking volunteers for its newest program called Recoveree Connection. Volunteers provide telephone support for North Dakotans in drug and alcohol recovery. Volunteers should have experience in the recovery process. RAILROAD SAFETY VOLUNTEERS: North Dakota Operation Lifesaver is seeking passionate volunteers to help spread their message about railroad safety. N.D. Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit public information and safety education program dedicated to eliminating collisions, deaths, and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights-of-way. CHILD-CARE HELP: Are you looking for child care for your infant, preschool or school-age child? Child Care Resource and Referral can assist you in evaluating your child-care needs and give you a customized list of available child-care providers in your area. LITERACY FUNDRAISER: The Minot Adult Literacy Volunteers organization is collecting used books, cell phones and inkjet cartridges as part of an ongoing fundraising effort. People may drop these items off at a collection center inside the Minot Adult Learning Center at 1609-4th Ave. NW.
MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS: The Minot Commission on Aging needs volunteers to assist with preparing for Meals on Wheels delivery from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and also needs volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels starting at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. If you are willing to give a few hours during the week or just a day every so often, please call 852-0561 for more information.
MONTHLY BUS PASSES: Monthly City Bus passes are available at the Minot Public Works Office, 1025-31st St. SE, and at Water Billing, 515-2nd Ave. SW. Passes for passengers with disabilities, senior citizens and students are $20. Adult passes are $26. Call 857-4140 for more information.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PANTRY, CLOTHING CENTERS: Volunteers are needed to work in the food and clothing pantry of Faith United Methodist Church. The pantry is open Mondays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. For more information and to volunteer, call the church at 838-1540. The Seventh-day Adventist Church's Clothing Center in the church at 1624 S. Main St. is now open Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch 2nd Chance Thrift Store in Minot needs volunteers to help with organizing clothes, hanging and tagging clothes, helping maintain store appearance, filling shelves and straightening the sales floor and helping out where needed. HISTORICAL VOLUNTEERS: The Ward County Historical Society needs volunteers to help with the collection, archives and research center. Volunteers will be trained in handling, storage, documentation and digitization of photographs, documents and artifacts. Volunteers can help save the region's history. Hours will be flexible. BUSINESS PROGRAM: The Minot Service Corps of Retired Executives office at 1925 S. Broadway is staffed by SCORE counselors every Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. Individuals may visit with SCORE members to learn about SCORE and/or to receive information about their business venture.
