Something is rotten in the town of Charming
Wed, December 3, 2008 @ 8:04PM
Twists, turns in FX drama get downright Shakespearean A few months ago it occurred to me that “Sons of Anarchy” on FX was something more than a story about gun-running thugs on motorcycles. Show creator Kurt Sutter worked for years on FX cop drama “The Shield,” which was a Byzantine maze of gray – good cops making bad decisions and bad cops working on the side of the angels when it suited their purpose, all while keeping towering sums of cash and drugs and criminals in play. So the petty one-horse criminality of Clay, Jax and Gemma playing out in the northern California town of Charming seems limited, right? Well, there are a couple bends in the road. First, Clay, the charter’s president, played note-perfectly by Ron Perlman, has some glowering skeletons in his closet.

Go Big 12
Sun, November 30, 2008 @ 10:58PM
Long time, no blog... Thought I'd do some as I wait for the Vikings to hopefully wrap up a win over the Bears on Sunday night football. With a win, the Vikes would take over sole possession of first place in the NFC North. I thought about doing a column on this topic and still might, but I figured for now, a blog was good enough. I always grew up rooting for the Big 10. I guess I figured even though we don't have a Big 10 team in North Dakota, we're still in Big 10 country. I mean, Minnesota is right next door and I guess I always just cheered for Big 10 teams as a kid (although no one in particular). I think a lot of people in this area are fans of one Big 10 school or another. I have recently changed my tune. I'm now a Big 12 man. I thought about it recently, almost every notable athlete from this area that has gone on to compete at the Division I level has attended a Big 12 university.

Langdon vs. Dickinson Trinity state Class B VB championship
Sat, November 22, 2008 @ 9:06PM
State Class B VB championship at MSU Dome Langdon (home) vs. Dickinson Trinity Langdon leads 11-6. Rachael Bachman kill makes it 15-9 Langdon . Trinity closes the gap to two points at 14-16 and Langdon takes a timeout. Neither team is playing great volleyball, but Langdon is making less errors. The Cardinals are three points away from taking the first game leading 22-16. Langdon gets tight trying to close out the first game and Trinity has come back to make it 24-23. Trinity completes the comeback to take the opening game 27-25. Nerves were a huge factor. Langdon led 23-17 and gave up 10 of the next 12 points. Langdon's Courtney Becker has been brilliant to start the second game. She has six kills in the game as Langdon leads 10-4. Timeout Trinity. Rachael Darling ace gives Langdon a 17-8 lead. Langdon should be able to hold its 22-13 lead. No collapse this time.

Fishin' for new sports
Thu, December 4, 2008 @ 3:02PM
It was brought to my attention that the state of Illinois has sanctioned bass fishing as a state sponsored sport for the upcoming season. While I like fishing as much as the next guy, I just don't buy it as a sport. There isn't the contest, the struggle, the test of wills in bass fishing that you have in traditional sports. I want two people to go into a ring and one come out, so to speak. Even that plastic cup stacking deal that some kids are doing at least is timed or side by side. I guess if the fishing tournament was set up where everyone had to dive in and wrestle the fish (maybe electronic fish so PETA won't freak out) in a small pool there would be a true contest. Maybe my northern culture just doesn't embrace the whole idea of the fishing tournament. I have probably watched 10 minutes of bass fishing on television in my 35 years and more often than not, it was to figure out what the hell the guy with the think southern accent was saying.
