DISABILITIES LUNCHEON PROGRAM: The deadline is March 22 to make reservations for the Minot Mayor's Committee on the Employment of People With Disabilities Luncheon Program March 26, which will feature Judy Siegle as speaker. The luncheon will be at 11:30 a.m. in the Holiday Inn-Riverside in Minot, with registration at 11:15 a.m. A complimentary lunch will be provided but there is limited seating.
JOB FAIR: The 10th Annual Construction Job Fair will be March 23 at Job Service North Dakota, 3416 N. Broadway. Employers will be hiring laborers, pipe layers, equipment operators, CDL drivers, asphalt paver or screed operators, builders, concrete finishers, concrete laborers, roofing technicians, sheet metal workers, form setters, supervisors, carpenters, superintendents and mechanics. Employers may do short interviews. Employers interested in attending should call 857-7521. STATE FAIR SHOWPASSES: North Dakota State Fair Grandstand Showpasses go on sale March 24 at 8 a.m. at the State Fair office at the State Fairgrounds in Minot. The fair will be July 23-31. The country group Brooks and Dunn will perform July 23. Eric Church and The Band Perry will perform July 25. Country singer Darius Rucker will perform July 30. The country group Sugarland, including Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles, will perform July 31. Grandstand Showpasses are $75 for standing or $85 for reserved seating. Included in the Showpass are concerts by Brooks and Dunn, Eric Church and The Band Perry, Darius Rucker and Sugarland. TEEN EVENT: The Minot Public Library will have a video games day for teens March 25 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the library. Refreshments will be served. Youth may play Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. FAMILY ALLIANCE EVENT: The North Dakota Family Alliance will have a "Rally & Friendraiser March 25 at 6:30 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church, 1000-3rd St. NE. There will be a "Protecting our Religious Freedoms" presentation and a discussion about other family issues. People will have a chance to learn more about the alliance. The event will feature jambalaya and gumbo made and served by Pastor Bob Edwards. Steve Cates, publisher of The Beacon, and Tom Freier, executive director of the family alliance, will speak. WILLISTON THEATER: Reservations are now being taken for Entertainment Inc.!'s production of "Boeing Boeing," a comedy by Marc Camoletti, which will be performed March 25-29 in Williston. Call the box office in Williston at 577-3179 for reservations.
TRANSPORTATION MEETINGS: The North Dakota Department of Transportation and the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute will host several public input meetings to develop a consensus about the levels of service North Dakota's state highways and local roads should provide. The meetings are open to the public but people need to make lunch reservations by March 26 by calling 231-7767 or by making reservations online at (www.ugpti.org/events/publicinput2010/). All meetings will begin at 10 a.m., will have a working lunch and should end by mid-afternoon. Area meetings are: Devils Lake, April 8, Spirit Lake Casino and Resort; Williston, April 13, Airport International Inn; Minot, April 14, Holiday-Inn Riverside; and Bismarck, April 15, Kelly Inn. A statewide meeting will be May 17 at the Kelly Inn in Bismarck to review comments received at the eight statewide public input meetings.
MARCH FOR BABIES: The March of Dimes' March for Babies will be March 27 in the North Dakota State Fairgrounds' 4-H Building in Minot. Check in will be at 9 a.m. with the march at 10 a.m. Lunch and a brief awards ceremony will follow. The March for Babies is the nation's oldest charitable walking event and the largest annual March of Dimes fundraiser. BABYSITTERS TRAINING: Preregistration is now being taken for Babysitters Training offered by the Mid-Dakota chapter of the American Red Cross. The training for youth ages 11 and older will be March 27 and 28 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Red Cross office at 2021-4th Ave. NW. The cost is $40 per person. FOOD DRIVE: The Hooterville Flion Lions Club will conduct the annual Helping Hands food drive March 27 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dakota Square Miracle Mart store. All nonperishable food items donated will be coordinated through Community Action Partnership-Minot Region to restock local food pantries.
DES LACS-BURLINGTON FUNDRAISER: The Des Lacs-Burlington Music Department will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser March 28 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Burlington Elementary School. A freewill offering will be collected to help defray costs for the band and choir trip to Florida in April.
PARENT/CHILD GAMING EVENT: Guys Read at the Library and GAME CRAZY are partnering for a night of hands-on gaming featuring all the latest games for the Wii and Xbox 360 March 29 at 7 p.m. in the Minot Public Library's Imagination Station. BUNNY WALK: The Downtown Business and Professional Association of Minot will sponsor the annual Bunny Walk for preschool children and their parents April 1 from 10 a.m. to noon in downtown Minot. Participating businesses will have an Easter egg displayed in their windows and will provide treats. Maps of participating businesses will be available at several locations downtown. HOMELESS NEEDS: The Minot Area Homeless Coalition Inc.'s inaugural "Spring Fling" is April 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and April 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. People who need clothing, personal hygiene or household goods may come to the homeless coalition office at 105-1st St. SE and pick up much needed items at no cost.
ART EVENT FOR CHILDREN: The Taube Museum of Art in Minot is sponsoring Art Ala Carte Saturdays for children and adults, an all-you-can-eat lunch, including dessert and beverage, and children's art activities. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. these Saturdays: April 3, chicken fingers and Tator Tots; May 1, cheeseburger and fries; and June 5, Fiesta Fun Run - Mexican. Prices are $6 for members; $8 for non-members; and $5 for children ages 10 and younger, payable at the door. That includes the lunch and art activities. A lunch ticket must be purchased to participate in art activities. The art activities are open to children of all ages and are in the Taube Education Classroom. No preregistration is needed. STATE FAIR ROCK CONCERTS: Tickets for performances by the rock bands KISS and Buckcherry will go on sale April 7 at 8 a.m. KISS tickets are $55 for standing room in front of the stage and $65 for reserved seating in the new grandstand. KISS will perform July 24. Buckcherry will perform July 29. Those who buy KISS tickets may buy Buckcherry tickets for $15. Otherwise, Buckcherry tickets are $25. MATS THEATER: The Minot Area Theatrical Society opens its 2010 season with "Let's Murder Marsha," a comic farce by Monk Ferris, April 8-11 at the Vegas Motel. Admission for the show-only Thursday night production is $8 for adults and $5 for children and seniors, beginning at 7 p.m. Ticket prices for dinner shows $20 for Friday and Saturday dinner theater beginning at 7 p.m., and $15 for the luncheon matinee Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. include the price of the meal. BOY SCOUT FUNDRAISER: Boy Scout Troop 411 will hold the Annual Pancake and Sausage Breakfast April 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Minot Moose Lodge. Proceeds will go toward defraying the cost of the troop's camping trips including Camp Wilderness in Minnesota. Tickets are $5. Children ages 5 and younger may eat for free. CHAMBER CHORALE CONCERT: The Minot Chamber Chorale will present its spring concert and ice cream social April 25 at 3 p.m. in Vincent United Methodist Church in Minot. The concert is titled "A Cornucopia of Composers" and will be a sampler of various composers. There is a new admission policy this year. There will be no admission charge for this concert but a freewill offering will be taken. CAREGIVER PROGRAM: The North Dakota Family Caregiver Support Program provides assistance for informal caregivers providing in-home care for an adult 60 years of age or older or caring for a person with Alzheimer's or related dementia regardless of age. The Caregiver Program also provides services for grandparents and other relative caregivers who are 55 years of age or older and are caring for a child 18 or younger or for an adult child with a disability between 19 and 59 years of age. UPHAM/BANTRY REUNION: Preregistration is being taken now for the 2010 Upham/Bantry All School Reunion July 2, 3 and 4 in Upham. The reunion, held every five years, is open to former students, teachers, school workers and their families. The event will begin with registration July 2 at 6 p.m in the Upham Fire Hall. Food vendors will be present and there will be disk jockey/karaoke entertainment at 9 pm. Registration July 3 will be at 9 a.m. with a parade at 11 a.m. The parade is open to all and those who want to participate should be at the elevator at the north end of Upham by 10 a.m. The day will include music, games and food and a banquet at 6 p.m. for registered reunion participants. TURTLE MOUNTAIN SCHOOL REUNION: The preregistration deadline is June 1 for those who would like to attend a Turtle Mountain Country School Reunion July 10 at Twin Oaks Resort and Convention Center at Lake Metigoshe, near Bottineau. Plans are to have registration July 10 at 3 p.m., a social hour from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and dinner from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The cost is $42 per person. Anyone who attended a country school in the Turtle Mountains or is interested in celebrating an educational lifestyle of the past may attend. HOMEWORK HELP: The Minot Public Library now offers an online tutor service for students by computer. Homework Help is available 24 hours a day; live tutoring sessions are only available from 3 to 10 p.m. The service offers free academic and career resources and tutoring from Tutor.com. Students in grades kindergarten through 12 and college students can get help with homework, studying, projects, essay writing and test preparation in subjects including algebra, statistics, chemistry, physics, social studies, English and more. Adults can get help with resume writing, GED preparation and academic support. All sessions are online and one-to-one with a live tutor. CLUBS DIRECTORY: The 30th edition of the Clubs and Organizations Directory that is compiled annually by the Information and Referral Office in the Minot Public Library is now available for the public for $3 per directory. The directory lists clubs and organizations including human service agencies in the Minot area, contact persons, addresses and phone numbers. People may purchase the directory at the library Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Additional information is also available from the Information and Referral Office including meeting room availability in the Minot area, day-care center listings, library and community events and consumer information. LIBRARY HOME DELIVERY: The Minot Public Library offers home delivery through the library's Special Services Program. The program is for people who are homebound, who have a visual or physical disability or who live in a nursing home or assisted living center. CELL PHONES RECYCLING: Easter Seals Goodwill ND, Inc. in Minot is collecting used cell phones Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the local office, 800-12th Ave. SW. Easter Seals Goodwill will be paid for each cell phone sent to Absolute Communications for recycling. Phones that are donated will be cleaned and given to agencies that need them.
CPR CLASS: The Minot Family YMCA offers a CPR-PR course the second Saturday of each month. The cost for the class is $75. People must preregister for the class. Call the Y at 852-0141 for preregistration information.
GARRISON DAM TOURS: Scheduled tours of the Garrison Dam Power Plant will be given to large groups Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Tours will include the generator floor, turbines, penstocks and tailrace areas. INFORMATION SERVICES: The Information and Referral office is an information service provided by the Minot Public Library. The mission of the office is to gather information of vital concern and to provide the information to those who need it. The primary function is to link people in need of information with the appropriate organization or agency that can meet their needs. DRIVERS NEEDED: The North Dakota Association for the Disabled in Minot needs drivers to transport individuals to out-of-town medical appointments. Drivers would use their own vehicles and would get mileage reimbursement. A van accessible for transporting people with handicaps is also available for some appointments. WISH LIST: The 2nd Story Social Club has a wish list of items needed. Those who would like to donate may bring monetary donations, envelopes, bingo prizes, paper towels, plastic silverware, paper plates, tissues, toilet paper, Styrofoam cups, napkins, tin foil, coffee filters, hand soap, pool cues, envelopes, cleaning supplies, dish soap, air freshener, 13 gallon garbage bags, healthy snacks, frozen pizza, cookies, bars, coffee and pop, CDs and DVDs. Volunteers provide telephone support for North Dakotans in drug and alcohol recovery. Volunteers should have experience in the recovery process. LITERACY FUNDRAISER: The Minot Adult Literacy Volunteers organization is collecting used books, cell phones and inkjet cartridges as part of an ongoing fundraising effort. People may drop these items off at a collection center inside the Minot Adult Learning Center at 1609-4th Ave. NW.
MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS: The Minot Commission on Aging needs volunteers to assist with preparing for Meals on Wheels delivery from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and also needs volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels starting at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PANTRY, CLOTHING CENTERS: Volunteers are needed to work in the food and clothing pantry of Faith United Methodist Church. The Seventh-day Adventist Church's Clothing Center in the church at 1624 S. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Mid-Dakota Chapter of the American Red Cross needs volunteers to staff the phone lines. The chapter is taking calls as part of the Response Center Network. VOLUNTEERS AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Volunteers for Mouse River Players Community Theatre are needed throughout the year for lights, costumes, makeup, set design, general cleaning and other tasks. The theater also needs Scott bathroom tissue, facial tissues, paintbrushes, paint rollers and covers, paper plates and Styrofoam cups, and pop and bottled water for the concession area.
SENIOR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: If you are age 55 or over, you are invited to join the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. RSVP offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities where you can make a difference in the community where you live. MAKE-A-WISH: The nonprofit organization Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Dakota is searching for volunteers in the Minot area. The foundation grants wishes to North Dakota children with life-threatening medical conditions. NUTRITION PROGRAM: The Family Nutrition Program is a federally funded program administered by NDSU Extension Service. The program offers classes, displays and demonstrations on nutrition, cooking, menu planning, food safety and managing food dollars.
