DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE: Preregistration is being taken now for a Defensive Driving Course Feb. 8 from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Minot Adult Learning Center, 1609-4th Ave. NW. The course is offered by the North Dakota Safety Council, Bismarck. The cost is $45 per person. Preregistration and prepayment are required. LEARNING CENTER REGISTRATION: The Minot Adult Learning Center will have registration for GED, career planning and academic review courses three times in February. Those dates are Feb. 8, 9 a.m. to noon; Feb. 9, 6 to 9 p.m.; and Feb. 22, 1 to 4 p.m. Registration is for students interested in earning their GED, increasing their academic skill level in order to enter post secondary education or who want help with career planning. GED tests will be administered in February the following dates: Feb. 9, 1 p.m.; Feb. 16, 1 and 6 p.m.; and Feb. 23, 1 p.m. Call 857-4488 to register.
TRINITY AUXILIARY FUNDRAISER: Trinity Health Auxiliary will sponsor a fundraising Wholesale Art Fair Feb. 9-10 from 7 a.m. to 6 and Feb. 11 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Trinity Hospital Skywalk between Trinity Hospital and Trinity Health Center-East. The Art Fair will include work from more than 100 artists. All proceeds will go toward a new Patient Communication System.
GOLDEN OAKS PTA: The Golden Oaks PTA of Minot will meet Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. in Jim Hill Middle School, 1000-6th St. SW. Lora Rochholz, Nancy Fjeld and Cindy Mau will talk about the learning program, "Read 180."
VALENTINE SWEETS SALE: St. Joseph's Auxiliary will sponsor a Valentine Sweets Sale fundraiser Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. at Edgewood Vista, 800-16th Ave. SE. The event will include fancy packages of candy, cookies and desserts.
STANLEY LIBRARY OPEN HOUSE: An open house for the new Stanley Public Library will be Feb. 11 from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Dean Hulse, a North Dakota author, will attend. He wrote the book, "Westhope: Life as a Former Farm Boy." He will give a reading at 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
DRIVER SAFETY COURSE: The North Dakota Safety Council in Bismarck is sponsoring an Alive at 25 Defensive Driving Course Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in Minot State University's Model Hall. This young driver intervention program is for those ages 14 and 25. The cost is $45, or $75 if the driver is ordered by the court. Prepayment and preregistration are required. MOVIE AUDITIONS: NoDak Films is spending two weeks in North Dakota beginning Feb. 11 to find actors to appear in its first production, "àLast Summer For Boys," slated for production this summer. The movie tells the story of a young North Dakota man who struggles with the girl he left, the friends he lost touch with and the tough choices he will make. NoDak Films needs about 30 people to fill speaking roles. TIOGA PIE SOCIAL: The Annual Valentine Benefit Pie Social in Tioga will be Feb. 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Tioga Fire Hall. The fundraiser is to raise money for the Lisbon Veterans Home. The event is sponsored by the Tioga American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 139 and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans East Williams County Chapter No. 31376. The event is open to the public.
DEMOCRATS' ENDORSING CONVENTION: The Minot Democratic-NPL will hold an endorsing convention for Districts 3, 5, 38, and 40 Feb. 13 at 9 a.m. in the Minot Municipal Auditorium. Party members will approve the district platform, endorse legislative candidates for Districts 3 and 5 and elect, through the preference caucus process, delegates and alternates to the Democratic-NPL State Convention March 25-28 in Fargo.
REPUBLICAN FORUM/DINNER: District 6 Republicans will hold an issues forum and Lincoln Day dinner Feb. 13 in the Lansford Community Center. The issues forum will be from 10 a.m. to noon and will feature state Treasurer Kelly Schmidt, U.S House candidates Paul Schaffner and Kevin Cramer, broker and radio commentator Gene Graner, all of Bismarck, and District 6 Rep. Glen Froseth of Kenmare. They will discuss health care reform, cap and trade, national security and other issues. The Lincoln Day Dinner will begin at noon, followed by the annual meeting. Rep. Dan Ruby, R-Minot, will give the keynote speech and delegates for the state convention will be chosen. Free child care will be provided. PUPPET SHOW: Main Street Books will host a special Valentine's Day puppet show presented by Mrs. Pages the Library Witch and family Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. at the store, 106 S. main St.. The event is free and Valentine's Day cookies will be served to children and parents.
ADULT COMPUTER TRAINING: Preregistration is being taken now for free computer training for adults the Minot Public Library will offer in March and in April. Classes are geared toward library information but will also include other information. Preregistration is required and class size is limited. Class topics include Computer Basics and Library Catalog, Internet Tips and Searching, Electronic Resources, NetLibrary eAudiobooks, Genealogy Basics, and Beginning Hotmail. MUSIC FESTIVAL: The 16th annual Frozen Fingers Old Time Music Festival will be Feb. 13 and 14 in Minot's Sleep Inn. The festival starts Feb. 13 with a guitar workshop at 10:30 a.m., followed by open stage at noon. Jacob Zerr and Rae Ann Neva will perform Feb. 13 at 1 p.m. and the Accordion Club at 2 p.m. Between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. there will be performances by Cotton Wood, Dakota Rose, Highway 43, Fauske Fiddlers, Acoustikatz and The US Band. Visitors can dance to the music of Dakota Rose Band at 8 p.m. for $5 admission. An accordion workshop kicks off Feb. 14 activities at 10:30 a.m., followed by open stage at noon. A polka worship service will be held at 1 p.m. Afternoon performances begin at 2 p.m. and will include Don Lee, Just Us, Sisters Four, Tin Star and the Gilbertson Family. Daily admission is $15. Lunch will be available all day.
PUPPET SHOW: A Valentine's Day Puppet Show for independent children ages 3 through 6 will be Feb. 13 at 10:30 a.m. in the Minot Public Library's Imagination Station. Parents may relax in the library while their child attends the show. Call 838-0606 for more information.
FUNDRAISER BREAKFAST: The Minot Eagles Auxiliary will have a breakfast to raise money for charity Feb. 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Minot Knights of Columbus Club, 2601 N. Broadway. Pancakes, sausage and scrambled eggs will be served for $4.50 per person. Preschoolers may eat for free.
KID'S DETECTIVE WORKSHOP: The Minot Public Library will have an "I SPY Detective Workshop" Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. in the library. WRITING TALK: Main Street Books Crackpot Prophets program will host local writer, musician and college professor Ron Fisher Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at the store, 106 S. TOURISM WORKSHOPS: Free tourism workshops will be held in various cities in February and March. Workshops will be conducted by the North Dakota Department of Commerce's Tourism Division. People who currently operate a tourism entity are invited. Topics will include social media, tourism development, online marketing, grant programs and cooperative opportunities. The event will offer those attending an opportunity to tap into the resources provided by North Dakota Tourism and network with other tourism-related entities. COLLEGE GOAL SUNDAY: College Goal Sunday 2010 will be at 11 sites in North Dakota including Minot State University Feb. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. in MSU's Old Main, third floor. The free event helps college-bound students and their families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It is open to students planning to attend any college or university. Financial Aid professionals from MSU and other volunteers will be available to help families complete the 2010-11 FAFSA. Students who complete a FAFSA that day will be eligible for drawings for prizes and scholarships. Log on at (www.fafsa.gov) to print a "FAFSA on the Web Worksheet" to help prepare. A completed 2009 federal tax return is necessary to complete the FAFSA. FREE TAX ASSISTANCE: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) clinics will open in Minot in February. The service offers tax preparation by VITA volunteers. The Minot area will have four locations: Community Action PartnershipsMinot Region, Minot State University, the AARP site at the Mid-Dakota Chapter of the Red Cross office and Minot Air Force Base. Volunteers will prepare federal and state tax returns for free for people who are elderly, military or meet income guidelines. VITA is sponsored by the IRS and the IRS trains, tests and certifies all volunteers. Volunteers will help people receive all the tax credits they qualify for and tax returns can be filed electronically. Information people should bring includes a photo ID; birth dates and Social Security cards for all family/dependents; wage and earning statements; interest and dividend statements; Social Security statements; retirement statements; other income and expense information; last year's tax return; and their property tax statement for their home. The sites are open a variety of days and times. Call the NDSU Extension Service in Ward County at 857-6450 for a list of dates and times. Some of the sites take walk-ins and some require appointments.
LIBRARY TEEN PROGRAMS: The Minot Public Library plans gaming activities for "teens and tweens" now through May. The gaming program will be the fourth Thursday of each month. The next one will be Feb. 25. Youth may play Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. The library has a variety of games but "teens and tweens" may bring their own games if they want. Other gaming dates are March 18, April 22 and May 27. Youth should preregister for these events by calling the library at 852-1045 or sending e-mail to Krista ktiller@srt.com.
NEW SUPPORT GROUP: A new support group has been formed for young new moms and pregnant teens. Meetings are the first Monday of each month from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in River of Life Assembly of God Church, 400-22nd Ave. NW. Snacks and child care are provided.
SOFTBALL MEETING: An adult summer softball managers meeting will be March 3 at 7 p.m. in the Minot Municipal Auditorium, Room 201. The meeting is mandatory for all adult softball teams who want to compete in a league this summer. Information packets will only be availalable for managers who attend the meeting. COMMUNITY THEATER: Reservations are now being taken for Mouse River Players Community Theatre's production of the comedy "The Compleat Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)" March 4, 5, 6 at 7:30 p.m. and March 7 at 2 p.m. in the Arlene Saugstad Theater, downtown, Minot, 115-1st St. SE. The play was written by Jess Borgeson, Adam Long and Daniel Singer, and is directed by Ryan Haider. Admission is by season ticket or individual tickets for $10 per person. PRAIRIE QUILT FESTIVAL: The Minot Prairie Quilt Guild will be the host group for the 17th Annual Prairie Quilt Festival, "Quilting is Sweet, Cupcake," March 19, 20 and 21 in the Grand International Inn in Minot. STATE FAIR SHOWPASSES: North Dakota State Fair Grandstand Showpasses go on sale March 24 at 8 a.m. at the State Fair office at the State Fairgrounds in Minot. The fair will be July 23-31. The country group Brooks and Dunn will perform July 23. Eric Church and The Band Perry will perform July 25. Country singer Darius Rucker will perform July 30. The country group Sugarland, including Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles, will perform July 31. Grandstand Showpasses are $75 for standing or $85 for reserved seating. Included in the Showpass are concerts by Brooks and Dunn, Eric Church and The Band Perry, Darius Rucker and Sugarland. ART EVENT FOR CHILDREN: The Taube Museum of Art in Minot is sponsoring Art Ala Carte Saturdays for children and adults, an all-you-can-eat lunch, including dessert and beverage, and children's art activities. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. these Saturdays: April 3, chicken fingers and Tator Tots; May 1, cheeseburger and fries; and June 5, Fiesta Fun Run - Mexican. Prices are $6 for members; $8 for non-members; and $5 for children ages 10 and younger, payable at the door. That includes the lunch and art activities. CAREGIVER PROGRAM: The North Dakota Family Caregiver Support Program provides assistance for informal caregivers providing in-home care for an adult 60 years of age or older or caring for a person with Alzheimer's or related dementia regardless of age. The Caregiver Program also provides services for grandparents and other relative caregivers who are 55 years of age or older and are caring for a child 18 or younger or for an adult child with a disability between 19 and 59 years of age. TURTLE MOUNTAIN SCHOOL REUNION: The preregistration deadline is June 1 for those who would like to attend a Turtle Mountain Country School Reunion July 10 at Twin Oaks Resort and Convention Center at Lake Metigoshe, near Bottineau. Plans are to have registration July 10 at 3 p.m., a social hour from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and dinner from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The cost is $42 per person. Anyone who attended a country school in the Turtle Mountains or is interested in celebrating an educational lifestyle of the past may attend. HOMEWORK HELP: The Minot Public Library now offers an online tutor service for students by computer. Homework Help is available 24 hours a day; live tutoring sessions are only available from 3 to 10 p.m. The service offers free academic and career resources and tutoring from Tutor.com. Students in grades kindergarten through 12 and college students can get help with homework, studying, projects, essay writing and test preparation in subjects including algebra, statistics, chemistry, physics, social studies, English and more. Adults can get help with resume writing, GED preparation and academic support. All sessions are online and one-to-one with a live tutor. CLUBS DIRECTORY: The 30th edition of the Clubs and Organizations Directory that is compiled annually by the Information and Referral Office in the Minot Public Library is now available for the public for $3 per directory. The directory lists clubs and organizations including human service agencies in the Minot area, contact persons, addresses and phone numbers. People may purchase the directory at the library Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Additional information is also available from the Information and Referral Office including meeting room availability in the Minot area, day-care center listings, library and community events and consumer information. LIBRARY HOME DELIVERY: The Minot Public Library offers home delivery through the library's Special Services Program. The program is for people who are homebound, who have a visual or physical disability or who live in a nursing home or assisted living center. CELL PHONES RECYCLING: Easter Seals Goodwill ND, Inc. in Minot is collecting used cell phones Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the local office, 800-12th Ave. SW. Easter Seals Goodwill will be paid for each cell phone sent to Absolute Communications for recycling. Phones that are donated will be cleaned and given to agencies that need them.
CPR CLASS: The Minot Family YMCA offers a CPR-PR course the second Saturday of each month. The cost for the class is $75. People must preregister for the class. Call the Y at 852-0141 for preregistration information.
GARRISON DAM TOURS: Scheduled tours of the Garrison Dam Power Plant will be given to large groups Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Tours will include the generator floor, turbines, penstocks and tailrace areas. INFORMATION SERVICES: The Information and Referral office is an information service provided by the Minot Public Library. The mission of the office is to gather information of vital concern and to provide the information to those who need it. The primary function is to link people in need of information with the appropriate organization or agency that can meet their needs. DRIVERS NEEDED: The North Dakota Association for the Disabled in Minot needs drivers to transport individuals to out-of-town medical appointments. Drivers would use their own vehicles and would get mileage reimbursement. A van accessible for transporting people with handicaps is also available for some appointments. WISH LIST: The 2nd Story Social Club has a wish list of items needed. Those who would like to donate may bring monetary donations, envelopes, bingo prizes, paper towels, plastic silverware, paper plates, tissues, toilet paper, Styrofoam cups, napkins, tin foil, coffee filters, hand soap, pool cues, envelopes, cleaning supplies, dish soap, air freshener, 13 gallon garbage bags, healthy snacks, frozen pizza, cookies, bars, coffee and pop, CDs and DVDs. Volunteers provide telephone support for North Dakotans in drug and alcohol recovery. Volunteers should have experience in the recovery process. RAILROAD SAFETY VOLUNTEERS: North Dakota Operation Lifesaver is seeking passionate volunteers to help spread their message about railroad safety. N.D. LITERACY FUNDRAISER: The Minot Adult Literacy Volunteers organization is collecting used books, cell phones and inkjet cartridges as part of an ongoing fundraising effort. People may drop these items off at a collection center inside the Minot Adult Learning Center at 1609-4th Ave. NW.
MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS: The Minot Commission on Aging needs volunteers to assist with preparing for Meals on Wheels delivery from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and also needs volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels starting at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PANTRY, CLOTHING CENTERS: Volunteers are needed to work in the food and clothing pantry of Faith United Methodist Church.
