AREA BLOOD DRIVES: United Blood Services of Minot has numerous blood drives in December. Appointments to donate blood should be made ahead of time. YOUTH NEW YEAR'S PARTY: Minot Youth for Christ and area charges are sponsoring "The Living End" New Year's Party for area middle school and high school students, grades six through 12, on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, in Minot. Registration is at 6:45 p.m. with the party from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. in Our Redeemer's Christian School gym. Activities will include volleyball, basketball and team gym games, an inflatable obstacle course, jousting, snacks, a performance by the Stay Out Late band, videos and wacky skits. The cost is $7 per person. Space is limited so people should preregister if possible by calling the Youth for Christ office at 839-4660.

MSU ALUMNI POKER FUNDRAISER: The North Dakota Texas Hold'em Poker Championship Tournament, sponsored by the Minot State University Alumni Association, will be Dec. 31 through Jan. 3 at the Vegas Motel, Minot. The charity poker tournament raises money for MSU's scholarship fund and is expected to draw about 1,300 players from across the country and Canada. Call 839-3000 for more information.

YOUTH EVENTS: Story time for children ages 18 months and older will be held Fridays in January at Ward County Public Library from 11:10 to 11:40 a.m. in the library, 405-3rd Ave. SE, north of The Minot Daily News office. The dates are Jan. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. Parents or guardians are asked to stay during story time.

BENEFIT CONCERT: Beardstock, a benefit concert for the Minot Homeless Coalition, will be Jan. 3 at 6 p.m. in the Grand International Inn in Minot. The band Stay Out Late will perform. The cost to attend is $6 per person or $5 if people bring a canned good to donate.

YMCA CLASS REGISTRATION: The Minot Family YMCA's new session of classes begin the week of Jan. 5 so people are asked to preregister soon by stopping at the Y, 3515-16th St. SW, by calling the Y at 852-0141, or visiting the Web site at (www.ymcaminot.org) for more information. Classes include youth swimming lessons for children ages 3-14, both members and non-members; land and water fitness classes for adults; parent-infant swimming lessons for infants ages 6 months to 3 years old and their parents; and Youth Itty Bitty Sports for children ages 3-5. Preschool sessions and a Small Time Hoops Basketball League for boys and girls are also starting. Preschool meets Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and includes a half hour of swimming lessons. The registration deadline for the Small Time Hoops League is Jan. 6 and the league will begin Jan. 17.

COMMUNITY THEATER: The Mouse River Players Community Theatre will present A.R. Gurney's "The Dining Room" Jan. 8-10 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. in the Arlene Saugstad Theater, downtown Minot, 115-1st St. SE. Season tickets may be used. CHILDREN'S ACTING CLASSES: Mouse River Players Community Theatre in Minot will offer youth acting classes Jan. 10, 17, 24 and 31 for youth ages 8-13, taught by experienced actors, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in The Arlene Saugstad Theater of the Mouse River Players building, downtown Minot, 115-1st St. SE. The first session is Set Up, the second is Warm Up, the third is Act Up, and the fourth is Lights Up. The first three sessions deal with understanding of set and stage movement. COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION: The Minot State University Financial Aid Office and the North Dakota Association of Financial Aid Administrators are sponsoring a college financial aid information session for high school seniors and their parents Jan. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon in the MSU Student Union Conference Center. Topics covered will include the application process, financial aid programs, scholarship deadlines, how to avoid scams and financial aid myths. This session is open to students planning to attend any college or university, and attendees will be eligible to register for a $250 scholarship drawing. ART ALA CARTE: The Taube Museum of Art, 2 N. Main St., is sponsoring "Art Ala Carte Saturdays", an all-you-can-eat lunch including dessert and beverage, and children's art activities Jan. 10, Feb. 7, March 14, April 11 and May 2. The lunches are from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Following is the schedule: Jan. 10, pancakes and sausage, Feb. 7, soup; March 14, pizza; April 11, hamburgers and fries; and May 2, tacos. The lunches are designed for children of all ages. Pay at the door prices are $7 for Taube members and $10 for nonmembers; $24 for a member family of up to four people and $30 for a family of up to four people; and $5 for children ages 10 and under. HERITAGE SINGERS VARIETY SHOW: Tickets go on sale Jan. 31 for the Minot Heritage Singers Annual Variety Show and Silent Auction Feb. 19-21 and Feb. 26-28 at 5 p.m. in the Vegas Motel, 2315 N. Broadway. Advance tickets are needed and are $20 each. On Jan. 31, advance tickets will be sold from 9 a.m. to noon at the South Broadway Plaza, 1809 S. Broadway, main level, Suite W. MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS WALK: The Walk MS Minot will be May 9 at Minot State University Dome. MINOT HISTORY WANTED: Mouse River Players Community Theatre is planning for a historical drama presentation in March. LIBRARY HOME DELIVERY: The Minot Public Library offers home delivery through the library's Special Services Program. The program is for people who are homebound, who have a visual or physical disability or who live in a nursing home or assisted living center. ART NEEDED: Individuals or organizations with information, art or collections to share are encouraged to contact the Minot Public Library about lobby display.

DRIVERS NEEDED: The North Dakota Association for the Disabled in Minot needs drivers to transport individuals to out-of-town medical appointments. Drivers would use their own vehicles and would get mileage reimbursement. A van accessible for transporting people with handicaps is also available for some appointments. WISH LIST: The 2nd Story Social Club has a wish list of items needed. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Rehab Services Inc. in Minot is seeking volunteers for its newest program called Recoveree Connection. Volunteers provide telephone support for North Dakotans in drug and alcohol recovery. Volunteers should have experience in the recovery process. RAILROAD SAFETY VOLUNTEERS: North Dakota Operation Lifesaver is seeking passionate volunteers to help spread their message about railroad safety. ND Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit public information and safety education program dedicated to eliminating collisions, deaths, and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights-of-way. INFORMATION SERVICES: The Information and Referral office is an information service provided by the Minot Public Library. The mission of the office is to gather information of vital concern and to provide the information to those who need it. The primary function is to link people in need of information with the appropriate organization or agency that can meet their needs. CLUBS DIRECTORY: The 28th edition of the Clubs and Organizations Directory is available for the public for $3 per directory. The directory lists clubs and organizations including human service agencies in the Minot area, contact persons, with addresses and phone numbers. People may purchase the directory at the Minot Public Library's Information and Referral Center Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The directory is published annually. Club presidents and members are asked to submit updated information for the 29th edition of the directory, which will be published later. LITERACY FUNDRAISER: The Minot Adult Literacy Volunteers organization is collecting used books, cell phones and inkjet cartridges as part of an ongoing fundraising effort. People may drop these items off at a collection center inside the Minot Adult Learning Center at 1609-4th Ave. NW.

YWCA CLASSES: The Minot YWCA is accepting applications for Pilates Class and Yoga Class. Pilates classes are available Monday through Thursday at 9:15 and 11:15 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. and people may come to as many pilates classes as they want per month. Yoga classes are available Monday and Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Pilates Class is $20 per month plus an annual YWCA membership of $25. POWERS LAKE CENTENNIAL: The Powers Lake Centennial Registration Committee is gathering addresses of graduates for the Powers Lake Centennial, which will be July 3-5, 2009. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PANTRY, CLOTHING CENTERS: Volunteers are needed to work in the food and clothing pantry of Faith United Methodist Church. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Mid-Dakota Chapter of the American Red Cross needs volunteers to staff the phone lines. The chapter is taking calls as part of the Response Center Network. Within hours of a major disaster, the American public can get immediate disaster-related assistance by calling the Red Cross GET-INFO line. Call 852-2828 to become a volunteer.

VOLUNTEERS AND EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Volunteers for Mouse River Players Community Theatre are needed throughout the year for lights, costumes, makeup, set design and other tasks. The theater also needs basic construction tools including hammers, screwdrivers, saws, table saws, a miter saw, painting brushes and rollers, flat white paint and shelving units.

SENIOR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: If you are age 55 or over, you are invited to join the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. RSVP offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities where you can make a difference in the community where you live. SENIOR LEAGUE: Anyone age 50 and over is invited to join the Senior Citizens League of Minot. Handicapped persons under the age of 50 are also welcome to join. RED CROSS WORKERS: The American Red Cross is looking for a few good people. The ARC's Armed Forces Emergency Services has vacancies for After-Hours Caseworkers. USED BOOKS: The Adult Literacy Program in Minot is looking for used books. People may drop them off at the Adult Learning Center, 1609-4th Ave. NW. They will be used for a book sale and reading materials for students.

TEEN TRAINING: Community Action Opportunities Inc. will be offering Teen Court Training for new youth volunteers ages 13-17. Youth volunteers serve as teen attorneys, court clerks, bailiffs and jurors. Volunteers receive training from area attorneys, meet new friends and learn about the judicial system. MAKE-A-WISH: The nonprofit organization Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Dakota is searching for volunteers in the Minot area. The foundation grants wishes to North Dakota children with life-threatening medical conditions. Currently, the foundation has opportunities for volunteering which include area volunteer chair, wish granting, the speaker bureau, airport greeters and special event organizers. NUTRITION PROGRAM: The Family Nutrition Program is a federally funded program administered by NDSU Extension Service. POWERS LAKE CENTENNIAL: The Powers Lake Centennial Registration Committee is gathering addresses of graduates for the Powers Lake Centennial, which will be July 3-5, 2009. The committee doesn't have lists of people who didn't graduate from Powers Lake but would like to receive mailings about the celebration. MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS: The Minot Commission on Aging needs volunteers to assist with preparing for Meals on Wheels delivery from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and also needs volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels starting at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. If you are willing to give a few hours during the week or just a day every so often, please call 852-0561 for more information.

MONTHLY BUS PASSES: Monthly City Bus passes are available at the Minot Public Works Office, 1025-31st St. SE, and at Water Billing, 515-2nd Ave. SW. Passes for passengers with disabilities, senior citizens and students are $20. Adult passes are $26. Call 857-4140 for more information.
