CHILDREN'S READING ACTIVITIES: Jan Brett Day for children in grades kindergarten through fifth will be Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. in the Minot Public Library. DEFENSIVE DRIVING CLASS: The N.D. Safety Council Inc., Bismarck, will offer the Defensive Driving Course Nov. 10 from 6 to 10 p.m. in Minot State University's Model Hall, Room 207. The cost is $45 per person, $40 if you are a member of the N.D. Safety Council, or $30 for senior citizens ages 55 and older. Additional family members may take the course for $20. CONNIE BEYER BENEFIT: A Benefit Spaghetti Supper for Connie Beyer will be Nov. 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Bread of Life Lutheran Church, 1415-17th Ave. SW. A freewill offering will assist with medical expenses. Donations, payable to Thrivent Financial For Lutherans, may also be sent to the church.
LAMOURE THRAILKILL BENEFIT: A Benefit Spaghetti Feed for Lamoure Thrailkill will be Nov. 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Minot Knights of Columbus Club, 2601 N. Broadway. He has been battling cancer for several months. He currently serves as the Minot Eagles Aerie worthy conductor. There will be a freewill offering.
OPEN MIC NIGHT: Main Street Books, 106 S. Main St., will have "Open Mic Night" Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in the store. If you have an original or favorite unoriginal poem, short story, song or comic skit, can read it. The store will be open throughout the event and free coffee will be provided. FOOD DRIVE: Freezin' for a Reason will be sponsored Nov. 12 by the Minot State University Student Social Work Organization. They will be accepting donations of food or money, which will be given to the Minot Area Homeless Coalition and local food pantries. Students will pick up your grocery or monetary donations on campus until Nov. 13. For pick-up, email debra.dewitz@minotstateu.edu (faculty advisor) or sswo@minotstateu.edu (students). If you would like to participate in the event or drop off your donations, SSWO will be at the Town and Country Shopping Mall parking lot Nov. 12 from noon to 9 p.m.
HEALTH INFORMATION: A "Bones, Bottoms and Balance" program will be presented Nov. 12 at 2:30 p.m. in the Baptist Home of Kenmare's activity room, third floor. Teressa Brock from Souris Valley Care Center in Velva will present a program and demonstrate exercises used in physical therapy to increase balance and mobility, decrease back pain and prevent urinary incontinence. The program is for men and women of all ages. Healthy snacks will be served and those attending will receive a theraband for exercises.
MATS THEATER: The Minot Area Theatrical Society will present "Five Women Wearing the Same Dress," a comic drama by Alan Ball, Nov. 13-15 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. in The Vegas Motel, Minot. Tickets for the Nov. 13 no-meal show are $8 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and children. Tickets are $20 each for the dinner shows Nov. 14-15 and $15 for the lunch show Nov. 16. BABYSITTERS' TRAINING: Preregistration is now being taken for Babysitters' Training offered by the Mid-Dakota Chapter Office of the American Red Cross in Minot. Infant and child CPR instruction will be Nov. 14 from 6 to 10 p.m. The Babysitters' Class training will be Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $40, which includes the book and training materials. The class is for youth, ages 11 and older. Call 852-2828 to preregister.
FOOD DRIVE: The Hooterville Flion Lions will conduct the annual "Kamping For Kans" Nov. 15 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Miracle Mart, Dakota Square Mall. People are asked to donate nonperishable food items. All food donations will be coordinated through Community Action Opportunities Inc. in Minot to restock local food pantries.
CRITICAL THINKING CLUB: The Minot Skeptical Society will meet Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Center for Family Medicine, 1201-11th Ave. SW. The society is for "critical thinkers" and those "interested in combating fraud and magical thinking in the Magic City."
PANCAKE BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER: A Pancake and Sausage Breakfast will be Nov. 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, 1800 Hiawatha St. There will be a freewill offering and proceeds will support the financial needs for 18 youth and four adults who will attend the ELCA National Youth Gathering in New Orleans July 22-26.
EASTER SEALS FUNDRAISER: Easter Seals Goodwill ND Inc. will sponsor a performance of "The Velveteen Rabbit" Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Minot Municipal Auditorium. The production will feature the Northern Prairie Performing Arts FM Community Theatre. Tickets are $12 for two people or $25 for five people or the entire family. UNIVERSITY CONCERT: The New Christy Minstrels will present a concert Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Minot State University's Ann Nicole Nelson Hall. PIES NEEDED: 2nd Story Social Club's annual Thanksgiving pie feast will be Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. at the club in Minot, 13-1st Ave. SW. Anyone who would like to donate pies is asked to call the club at 838-0912.
RYDER REUNION MEETING: The Ryder Alumni Association will meet Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Curt's Place in Ryder. The meeting is being held to plan the 95th anniversary of the first graduating class of Ryder High School. The meeting is open to the public and planning ideas are welcome. The anniversary event will be July 18, also the same day as the Ryder Bull-a-Rama.
BOOK CLUB: Main Street Books next book club meeting will be Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the store at 106 S. Main St. This month's book, "Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons," is by a North Dakota author, Lorna Landvik. Call 839-4050 for more information.
HIGH SCHOOL THEATER: The Minot High School-Central Campus Playmakers will present the comedy, "Don't Drink the Water" by Woody Allen, Nov. 21-22 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. in Central Campus Theatre. The play is produced through special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. Chad Gifford is the director. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students. Reservations are not necessary. NODAKORDS: The Nodakords 41st Annual Harvest of Harmony concert, "One More Song," will be Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Holiday Inn-Riverside Coliseum. Special guest quartet will be Ignition. Admission is $8 at the door or $5 with a discount coupon which is available from Nodakord business sponsors. Children ages 18 and younger will be admitted for free.
BROADWAY SAMPLER: Mouse River Players Community Theatre will present a musical revue, "A Broadway Sampler," Nov. 28-29 in The Arlene Saugstad Theater downtown, 115-1st St. SE. Social hour will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the performance at 7:30 p.m. There will be food, door prizes and Broadway show tunes performed by local youth and adults. Tickets are $15 per person. WILLISTON THEATER: Entertainment, Inc! in Williston has set its 2008-09 season. Plays to be performed include "Don't Hug Me" Nov. 28-30 and Dec. 4-7; "Is He Dead?" Feb. 12-15; "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" March 19-23 and "The Pajama Game" May 8-10 and May 14-17. All performances will take place at the Old Armory Theatre in Williston. RENAISSANCE FEAST: The Minot Chamber Chorale will present the annual "A Renaissance Christmas Feast" Dec. 4-6 in the Minot Holiday Inn Riverside Coliseum. A social begins at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $27 for members, $32 for nonmembers and $17 for children. Call Jacobsen's Music at 838-8709 for tickets.
CPR CLASS: The Minot Family YMCA offers a CPR-PR course the second Saturday of each month. The cost for the class is $75. People must preregister for the class. Call the Y at 852-0141 for preregistration information.
ART ALA CARTE: The Taube Museum of Art, 2 N. Main St., is sponsoring "Art Ala Carte Saturdays", an all-you-can-eat lunch including dessert and beverage, and children's art activities Dec. 13, Jan. 10, a date to be announced later in February, March 14, April 11 and May 2. The lunches are from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Following is the schedule: Dec. 13, macaroni and cheese; Jan. 10, pancakes and sausage, February, soup; March 14, pizza; April 11, hamburgers and fries; and May 2, tacos. The lunches are designed for children of all ages. Pay at the door prices are $7 for Taube members and $10 for nonmembers; $24 for a member family of up to four people and $30 for a family of up to four people; and $5 for children ages 10 and under. RAILROAD REPRESENTATIVE: A representative from the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board will be in Minot Dec. 16 from 8 a.m. to noon in the Federal Building, Room B-7, 100-1st St. SW. The board is a federal agency which administers the Railroad Retirement and Railroad Unemployment Insurance Acts. People should call the district office in Fargo at 239-5117 for an appointment. Those without appointments will be assisted as time permits.
YWCA CLASSES: The Minot YWCA is accepting applications for Pilates Class and Yoga Class. Pilates classes are available Monday through Thursday at 9:15 and 11:15 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. and people may come to as many pilates classes as they want per month. Yoga classes are available Monday and Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Pilates Class is $20 per month plus an annual YWCA membership of $25. Yoga classes are $15 per month plus the annual $25 fee. People may start these classes anytime. All classes are held at 1020 N. Broadway. Call 838-1812 for more information.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Rehab Services Inc. in Minot is seeking volunteers for its newest program called Recoveree Connection. Volunteers provide telephone support for North Dakotans in drug and alcohol recovery. Volunteers should have experience in the recovery process. RAILROAD SAFETY VOLUNTEERS: North Dakota Operation Lifesaver is seeking passionate volunteers to help spread their message about railroad safety. ND Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit public information and safety education program dedicated to eliminating collisions, deaths, and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights-of-way. MINOT HISTORY WANTED: Mouse River Players Community Theatre is planning for a historical drama presentation in March. In conjunction with this, thy are asking for anyone who is willing to share their memories of the 1920s and 1930s in Minot to contact Holly Eidsness at 839-8210 or leave a message at the theater office at 838-3939.
WISH LIST: The 2nd Story Social Club has a wish list of items needed. Those who would like to donate may bring monetary donations, sliding window bingo cards, Christmas gifts for members which will be given out Dec. 19 at the club's Christmas Party at the Municipal Armory, plastic silverware, paper plates, paper towels, tissues, toilet paper, Styrofoam cups, napkins, hand soap, bingo prizes, air freshener, 13 gallon garbage bags, healthy snacks, cookies, bars, coffee and pop. The club is located at 13-1st Ave. SW. The best time to drop off donations is weekdays after 5 p.m. or on the weekends. 2nd Story is a social club for adults with developmental disabilities. The club is now accessible for those with handicaps.
CLUBS DIRECTORY: The 28th edition of the Clubs and Organizations Directory is available for the public for $3 per directory. The directory lists clubs and organizations including human service agencies in the Minot area, contact persons, with addresses and phone numbers. People may purchase the directory at the Minot Public Library's Information and Referral Center Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The directory is published annually. Club presidents and members are asked to submit updated information for the 29th edition of the directory, which will be published later. Additional information is also available from that office including meeting room availability in the Minot area, day-care center listings, library and community happenings and consumer information.
LIBRARY HOME DELIVERY: The Minot Public Library offers home delivery through the library's Special Services Program. The program is for people who are homebound, who have a visual or physical disability or who live in a nursing home or assisted living center. The collection includes books in regular or large print format and audiobooks on cassette and compact disks and music CDs or cassettes. Call Kathy or Jeanne at 852-1045 for more information.
DRIVERS NEEDED: The North Dakota Association for the Disabled in Minot needs drivers to transport individuals to out-of-town medical appointments. Drivers would use their own vehicles and would get mileage reimbursement. A van accessible for transporting people with handicaps is also available for some appointments. EASTER SEALS SERVICES: Easter Seals Goodwill ND Inc,. offers in-home support services for people with disabilities and for senior citizens; offers personal care, homemaker and other services; rents equipment including walkers, wheel chairs and other medical equipment; and operates the Goodwill Retail Store in Minot. CHILD-CARE HELP: Are you looking for child care for your infant, preschool or school-age child? LITERACY FUNDRAISER: The Minot Adult Literacy Volunteers organization is collecting used books, cell phones and inkjet cartridges as part of an going furaising effort. People may drop these items off at a collection center inside the Minot Adult Learning Center at 1609-4th Ave. NW.
POWERS LAKE CENTENNIAL: The Powers Lake Centennial Registration Committee is gathering addresses of graduates for the Powers Lake Centennial, which will be July 3-5, 2009. The committee doesn't have lists of people who didn't graduate from Powers Lake but would like to receive mailings about the celebration. MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS: The Minot Commission on Aging needs volunteers to assist with preparing for Meals on Wheels delivery from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and also needs volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels starting at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. If you are willing to give a few hours during the week or just a day every so often, please call 852-0561 for more information.
MONTHLY BUS PASSES: Monthly City Bus passes are available at the Minot Public Works Office, 1025-31st St. SE, and at Water Billing, 515-2nd Ave. SW. Passes for passengers with disabilities, senior citizens and students are $20. Adult passes are $26. Call 857-4140 for more information.
