AREA VACCINE CLINICS: H1N1 influenza vaccine clinics will be held Nov. 9 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Underwood City Hall and and Nov. 12 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church in Towner. The First District Health Unit offices of McLean County and Sheridan County are holding the walk-in clinic in Underwood.  The First District Health Unit-McHenry County office is holding the walk-in clinic in Towner. Vaccine will be offered to all children ages 6 months through 18 years old, to pregnant women and healthy parents and siblings of infants younger than 6 months old. No appointments will be taken. The vaccinations are free. Vaccines will be given in both the injectable (shot) form and the nasal spray (flumist) form.

AREA BLOOD DRIVES: United Blood Services of Minot has numerous blood drives in November. Appointments to donate blood should be made ahead of time. REPUBLICAN PROGRAM: Reservations are needed before Nov. 9 for First Lady Mikey Hoeven's talk about involvement, "Snapshots," Nov. 12 in the Grand International Inn, Minot. Hosted by the Minot Area Republican Women, the dinner and program will begin at 6 p.m. The event is open to the public. The cost is $15 and people should make reservations by calling 839-6036.

DEVILS LAKE OUTLET MEETING: The North Dakota Office of the State Engineer will hold a meeting of the Devils Lake outlet advisory committee Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. in the Ramsey County Courthouse's Historical Room, 524-4th Ave. NE, Devils Lake. Agenda items will include summer/fall 2009 precipitation/lake information; stream standard changes; 2009 Devils Lake outlet operations; Devils Lake outlet expansion; and the 2010 outlook and outlet operations.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE: Preregistration is now being taken for a Defensive Driving Course offered Nov. 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Minot State University's Model Hall, Room 207. The North Dakota Safety Council Inc., Bismarck. sponsors the class. People who complete the class are eligible for an auto insurance discount and a three-point reduction on their driving record. MOUSE RIVER PLAYERS REVUE: Reservations are now being taken for the Mouse River Players Community Theatre's "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas ... Revue" Nov. 27-28 in The Arlene Theatre, downtown Minot, 115-1st St. SE. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres and a social hour. The musical will begin at 7:30 p.m. The cost to attend is $15 and reservations are recommended. The reservation number is 1-866-667-1977. The show is for people of all ages and will include Christmas favorites as well as some of the less-familiar selections. There will be drawings for door prizes. People may park in the St. Leo's parking lot east of the building. This is a seasonal "extra" and not part of the season ticket package. The reservation line will close two hours prior to each performance. Unclaimed reservations will be made available for walk-in purchase 15 minutes before curtain time.

CHILD EVANGELISM PROGRAM: Child Evangelism Fellowship will hold Good News Club for children in grades kindergarten through sixth from 3:10 to 4:20 p.m. at the following schools: Edison Elementary Fallout Shelter, Tuesdays, Nov. 10 through Dec. 8; Bel Air Elementary Gym, Mondays, Nov. 16 through Dec. 14; and Longfellow Elementary Library, Nov. 18 and Nov. 25. CHILDREN'S LIBRARY PROGRAM: Preregistration is now under way for an activity planned for children in grades kindergarten through fifth on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, when school is not in session. The program will be at 2 p.m. in the Minot Public Library's Imagination Station. There will be pirate stories and "pirate activities." Parents should call 838-0606 to preregister their children.

BOOK SALE: The Ward County Public Library's Second Annual Used Book Sale will be Nov. 9 and 10 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the library, 405-3rd Ave. SE, across from The Minot Daily News building. The sale will include fiction and non-fiction books from "big name authors" with prices ranging from 50 cents to $2 per book.

VETERANS BAKE SALE: The Minot Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary will hold the annual Veterans Day Bake Sale Nov. 11 at noon in the Minot VFW Club, 1100-31st St. SE. Members may bring their baked goods to the VFW Club after 3 p.m. Nov. 10 or before noon Nov. 11. All proceeds from the bake sale will be donated to cancer aid and research.

LIBRARY PROGRAMS FOR TEENS: The Minot Public Library's teen activities planned include games with Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. to noon. Refreshments will be served. A program on skin care will also be held Nov. 11 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Another gaming event will be National Gaming Day at the Minot Public Library Nov. 14 from 1 to 3 p.m., which is open to all ages. That event will include board games, card games, Xbox360 and Nintendo Wii. People may also bring their favorite game to play. Preregistration is encouraged. SALVATION ARMY THANKSGIVING: Reservations are now being taken for the Minot Salvation Army's Thanksgiving Dinner Nov. 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Parker Senior Center, 21-1st Ave. SE. Jerry Schlag will provide entertainment. The dinner is open to the public but people need to call the Salvation Army Corps at 838-8925 for reservations.

HOLIDAY BELL RINGERS NEEDED: The Minot Salvation Army's Annual Bell Ringing Campaign will begin Nov. 20 and continues through Dec. 24. Volunteer bell ringers are needed for more than 2,500 hours of volunteer time. Volunteer hours available are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. through 8 p.m. Groups or individuals may choose to ring in shifts ranging from two to eight hours at several locations in Minot. Volunteers should contact the Salvation Army in Minot at 838-8925 to reserve a location.

MATS THEATER: The Minot Area Theatrical Society will present Fred Carmichael's "All the Better to Kill You With" Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at $8 for adults, $5 for children and seniors; Nov. 13-14 dinner theater starting at 7 p.m. at $20, dinner service included; and Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. at $15, lunch service included, in The Vegas Motel, Minot. UNIVERSITY THEATER: Minot State University Theater Department plans to present the "Freshman 10/Alpha Particles" Nov. 12-14 in the Black Box Theater of MSU's Hartnett Hall. Call 858-3172 for more information.

HIGH SCHOOL THEATER: The Minot High School-Central Campus Playmakers will present "The Servant of Two Masters" by Carlo Goldani, in a translation by Jeffrey Hatcher and Paulo Emilio Lambi Nov. 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. in Central Campus Auditorium. It is a story of forbidden loves, mistaken identities, a mischievous servant and a Fricandeau. It's an old Italian Commedia D'ellarte play with a modern translation. WARD COUNTY LIBRARY STORY TIME: Ward County Public Library in Minot will offer story time for children ages 18 months and older and their parents or guardians. Story times will be held most Fridays including Nov. 13 and 20; Dec. 4, 11 and 18; Jan. 8, 15, 22 and 29; Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26; March 5, 12 and 26; April 9, 16, 23 and 30; and May 7 and 14 from 11 a.m. to noon in the library at 405-3rd Ave. NE, across from the Minot Daily News building. Story time will also include a craft/activity and a treat. Parents and guardians are asked to stay during story time. 

SOUP FUNDRAISER: Minot's Fourth Annual Bowls for Babies, a fundraiser for the March of Dimes-ND, will be Nov. 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Grand International Inn in Minot. Participants pay $10, select a locally crafted bowl painted by area children and local organizations, fill it with their choice of soup, and they may keep the bowl. The menu will also include fresh breads and dessert. Sponsors include Trinity Health and Gate City Bank. The North Dakota Healthy Pregnancy Task Force, represented by various local agencies, coordinates the event. The food for the event is donated by local restaurants and grocers. Art for a raffle was also donated by several local artists and businesses. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

CHISHOLM BENEFIT: A Spaghetti Lunch, Silent Auction and Bake Sale Benefit for Tracy and J.C. Chisholm of Bottineau, formerly of Minot, will be Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. in the Grand International Inn in Minot. Friends and family are sponsoring the event, various businesses have donated items and there will be a freewill offering. Tracy is pregnant and her baby has Gastroschesis, a birth defect. The baby will require surgery immediately after birth. Tracy will have to travel to the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis for doctor visits and for the birth. The baby will probably be in the intensive care unit for about a month. The benefit is to raise funds for travel and medical expenses. People may also donate to the Tracy and J.C. Chisholm Benefit Fund set up at GEM Federal Credit Union of Minot.

LEARNING CENTER REGISTRATION: The Minot Adult Learning Center will hold the next registration for GED, career planning and academic review courses Nov. 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. and Nov. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration is for students interested in earning their GED, increasing their  academic skill level in order to enter post secondary education or who want help with career planning. GED tests are administered every Tuesday at 1 p.m. and many Tuesday evenings. Call 857-4488 to register.

PIES NEEDED: 2nd Story Social Club in Minot needs volunteer pie bakers to help with 2nd Story's annual Thanksgiving Pie Feast Nov. 17. Pies, ice cream and whipped cream are needed. Call 838-0912 if you can help.

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS SERIES: Season subscriptions are available for the International Artists Series of Minot concerts. The second concert will feature former New York City police officer Daniel Rodriguez Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Minot State University's Ann Nicole Nelson Hall. Other concerts will include the six-man a cappella troupe Chapter 6 Feb. 8, 7:30 p.m.; the Cavatino Duo, Eugenia Molinar on flute and Denis Azabagic on guitar March 9, 7:30 p.m; and San Diego-based quintet Presidio Brass April 11, 3 p.m., all in Ann Nicole Nelson Hall, Admission is by season subscriptions only. NORTHERN PLAINS MEETING: The Northern Plains Heritage Foundation will have a public input meeting on the management plan for the Northern Plains Heritage Area Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Building on Main Avenue in Washburn. Sarah Vogel is president of the foundation. The meeting will provide information on what the heritage area is, what it is not, grant opportunities available and a recent amendment to the legislation clarifying that participation in the heritage area is voluntary. National Heritage Areas are 49 places designated by Congress as having nationally significant historical, cultural or natural sites. A portion of Burleigh, McLean, Mercer, Morton and Oliver counties in North Dakota was named the Northern Plains Heritage Area in legislation signed by President Obama March 30. MSU LECTURE SERIES: Minot State University Northwest Art Center's next lecture will be Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in MSU's Aleshire Theater, Hartnett Hall. Gregory Gagnon, Department of American Indian Studies at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, will be the speaker for Native American Awareness Week.

MINOT THEATER: The Minot Area Theatrical Society will present three benefit one-acts, "Ghost World," "The Way of All Fish" and "Dearborn Heights" Nov. 20-21 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. in The Vegas Motel in Minot. AREA FOOD DRIVE: The Hooterville Flion Lions will conduct the annual "Kamping for Kans" food drive Nov. 21 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Miracle Mart-Dakota Square Mall location. All food donations will be coordinated through Community Action Partnership-Minot Region to restock local food pantries.

SANTA/HARLEY-DAVIDSON FUNDRAISER: The Santa Rides a Harley fundraiser will be Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Roughrider Harley-Davidson, 515-20th Ave SE. People may have their photo taken with Santa on a Harley-Davidson, for a suggested donation of $5, and may register to win one of two bicycles. Photos will be taken by 360 Digitography with profits going to the Domestic Violence Crisis Center in Minot. The Minot Police Department Crime Prevention Unit and the Minot Fire Department will provide safety information.  This event is sponsored by the Minot Chapter Harley Owners Group.

RYDER BAZAAR: The Ryder Bazaar and Turkey Drawing will be Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Ryder School Gym. There will be more than 20 vendors. Lunch will be provided by Curt's Place. There will also be hourly door prizes. The turkey drawing will be at 3 p.m. on Main Street. The event is sponsored by the Ryder Community Club.

PARSHALL CRAFT AND BAKE SALES/LUNCHEON: Craft and Bake Sales and a Luncheon are planned Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Parshall American Legion Building on Main Street in Parshall. Bake sales will be held by area churches. The luncheon will include soup or chili in a bread bowl, a children's plate and/or dessert and coffee. Raffle prizes will be drawn at 2:30 p.m. The event is hosted by the Parshall Promoters organizations.

MINOT MODEL REUNION COMMITTEE: The Minot Model Alumni Association Reunion 2010 Committee meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in the Grand International Inn. The next meeting is Dec. 1. The committee needs all the class chairmen to attend. Anyone interested in helping may also attend.

RENAISSANCE CHRISTMAS FEAST: The Minot Chamber Chorale will present its annual Renaissance Christmas Feast Dec. 3-5 in the Holiday Inn-Riverside Coliseum in Minot. Reservations are needed for that event. Adult dinners are $35, with a choice of prime rib, chicken cordon bleu or a vegetarian plate. A child's portion of chicken strips will be $20. YOUNG DRIVERS COURSE: North Dakota Safety Council's Alive at 25 Defensive Driving Course will be Dec. 10 at 5:30 p.m., Minot State University's Model Hall, Room 207. This young driver intervention four-hour program zeroes in on drivers between the ages of 14 and 25 ­ the group most likely to be involved in fatal collisions. Those who complete the course are eligible for an insurance discount and three-point reduction on their driving record. Pre-payment and preregistration are required. ART EVENT FOR CHILDREN: The Taube Museum of Art in Minot is once again sponsoring Art Ala Carte Saturdays for children and adults, an all-you-can-eat lunch, including dessert and beverage, and children's art activities. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. these Saturdays: Dec. 12, pizza and salad; Jan. 16, grilled cheese and tomato soup; Feb. 6, Soup It Up; March 6, spaghetti and meatballs; April 3, chicken fingers and Tator Tots; May 1, cheeseburger and fries; and June 5, Fiesta Fun Run - Mexican. Prices are $6 for members; $8 for non-members; and $5 for children ages 10 and younger, payable at the door. That includes the lunch and art activities. A lunch ticket must be purchased to participate in art activities. The art activities are open to children of all ages and are in the Taube Education Classroom. No preregistration is needed. RAILROAD REPRESENTATIVE AVAILABLE: A representative of the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board will be in Minot Dec. 15 from 8 a.m. to noon in the Federal Building, Room B-2, 100-1st St. SW, downtown Minot. The board is a federal agency which administers the Railroad Retirement and Railroad Unemployment Insurance Acts. Appointments should be made by calling the Fargo office at (877) 772-5772. Those with appointments will be assisted first. Those without appointments will be assisted as time permits.

NEW YEAR'S EVE GALA: The Second Annual Minot Young Professionals New Year's Eve Gala will be Thursday, Dec. 31, in the Holiday Inn-Riverside. The event is open to everyone ages 21 and over. Dress will be semi-formal. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. The band 24Seven will play from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The cost is $50 for Young Professionals members and Minot State University students and $60 for the public. HOMEWORK HELP: The Minot Public Library now offers an online tutor service for students, available all hours by computer. The service offers free academic and career resources and tutoring from Tutor.com. Students in grades kindergarten through 12 and college students can get help with homework, studying, projects, essay writing and test prepararation in subjects including algebra, statistics, chemistry, physics, social studies, English and more. Adults can get help with resume writing, GED preparation and academic support. All sessions are online and one-to-one with a live tutor. VOLUNTEERS WANTED: Girl Scouts ­ Dakota Horizons of Minot is seeking volunteers in Minot, the Minot Air Force Base and the surrounding areas. Volunteers are needed, even if you only have an hour, a day or a weekend to volunteer. Call 852-5611 or 1-800-279-5306 for more information on volunteering. 

LIBRARY LEGOS: The Minot Public Children's Library wants to start a LEGO club for children. The club would meet monthly with a theme to build each month. The library is soliciting donations of LEGOs. LEGOs in good condition may be dropped off at the Children's Library. Time and dates of meetings will be set when LEGOs are obtained. Call 838-0606 for more information.

CELL PHONES RECYCLING: Easter Seals Goodwill ND, Inc. in Minot is collecting used cell phones Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the local office, 800-12th Ave. SW. Easter Seals Goodwill will be paid for each cell phone sent to Absolute Communications for recycling. Phones that are donated will be cleaned and given to agencies that need them.

CPR CLASS: The Minot Family YMCA offers a CPR-PR course the second Saturday of each month. The cost for the class is $75. People must preregister for the class. Call the Y at 852-0141 for preregistration information.

GARRISON DAM TOURS: Scheduled tours of the Garrison Dam Power Plant will be given to large groups Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Tours will include the generator floor, turbines, penstocks and tailrace areas. Purses, cameras, diaper bags and cell phones are not allowed. All people over age 18 need identification. To schedule a tour, call Linda Phelps at 654-7411, ext. 246.

LIBRARY HOME DELIVERY: The Minot Public Library offers home delivery through the library's Special Services Program. The program is for people who are homebound, who have a visual or physical disability or who live in a nursing home or assisted living center. The collection includes books in regular or large print format and audiobooks on cassette and compact discs and music CDs or cassettes. Call Lacey or Jeanne at 852-1045 for more information.

ART NEEDED: Individuals or organizations with information, art or collections to share are encouraged to contact the Minot Public Library about lobby display.

CLUBS DIRECTORY: The 29th edition of the Clubs and Organizations Directory is available for the public for $3 per directory. The directory lists clubs and organizations including human service agencies in the Minot area, contact persons, with addresses and phone numbers. People may purchase the directory at the Minot Public Library's Information and Referral Center Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The directory is published annually. Club presidents and members are asked to submit updated information for the 30th edition of the directory, which will be published later. Call Debbie at the library's Information and Referral office at 852-0333 for more information. Additional information is also available from that office including meeting room availability in the Minot area, day-care center listings, library and community happenings and consumer information.

INFORMATION SERVICES: The Information and Referral office is an information service provided by the Minot Public Library. The mission of the office is to gather information of vital concern and to provide the information to those who need it. The primary function is to link people in need of information with the appropriate organization or agency that can meet their needs. The Information and Referral Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Contact Debbie at 852-0333 if you have questions or stop by at 516-2nd Ave SW.

DRIVERS NEEDED: The North Dakota Association for the Disabled in Minot needs drivers to transport individuals to out-of-town medical appointments. Drivers would use their own vehicles and would get mileage reimbursement. A van accessible for transporting people with handicaps is also available for some appointments. Contact Debbie at 838-8414 if you are interested in being a driver and for more information.

WISH LIST: The 2nd Story Social Club has a wish list of items needed. Those who would like to donate may bring monetary donations, bingo prizes, paper towels, plastic silverware, paper plates, tissues, toilet paper, Styrofoam cups, napkins, coffee filters, hand soap, pool cues, envelopes, cleaning supplies, dish soap, air freshener, 13 gallon garbage bags, healthy snacks, frozen pizza, cookies, bars, coffee and pop, CDs and DVDs. The club is located at 13-1st Ave. SW. The best time to drop off donations is weekdays after 5 p.m. or on the weekends. 2nd Story is a social club for adults with developmental disabilities. The club is now accessible for those with handicaps.

RAILROAD MUSEUM RECYCLING: The Railroad Museum of Minot is asking people to bring their recyclable materials to the museum any Saturday or call the museum at 852-7091 so someone can pick up the materials. The museum is collecting paper and metals, including aluminum beverage cans. Recycling money will be used for projects at the museum.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Rehab Services Inc. in Minot is seeking volunteers for its newest program called Recoveree Connection. Volunteers provide telephone support for North Dakotans in drug and alcohol recovery. Volunteers should have experience in the recovery process. RAILROAD SAFETY VOLUNTEERS: North Dakota Operation Lifesaver is seeking passionate volunteers to help spread their message about railroad safety. N.D. Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit public information and safety education program dedicated to eliminating collisions, deaths, and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights-of-way. EASTER SEALS SERVICES: Easter Seals Goodwill ND Inc. offers in-home support services for people with disabilities and for senior citizens; offers personal care, homemaker and other services; rents equipment including walkers, wheel chairs and other medical equipment; and operates the Goodwill Retail Store in Minot. CHILD-CARE HELP: Are you looking for child care for your infant, preschool or school-age child? Child Care Resource and Referral can assist you in evaluating your child-care needs and give you a customized list of available child-care providers in your area. LITERACY FUNDRAISER: The Minot Adult Literacy Volunteers organization is collecting used books, cell phones and inkjet cartridges as part of an ongoing fundraising effort. People may drop these items off at a collection center inside the Minot Adult Learning Center at 1609-4th Ave. NW.

MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS: The Minot Commission on Aging needs volunteers to assist with preparing for Meals on Wheels delivery from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, and also needs volunteers to deliver Meals on Wheels starting at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. If you are willing to give a few hours during the week or just a day every so often, please call 852-0561 for more information.
