Second Class B girls basketball poll

December 26, 2012 - Staff Blog
The second class B girls basketball poll came out just before the holiday and didn't really include many surprising things among the top 10.

Bishop Ryan remained the No. 1 team after going on the road and routing Dickinson Trinity on Dec. 22. The Lions received 10 of the possible 12 first-place votes. I too was one of the 10 that had Ryan atop my rankings.

Behind the Lions is not one but two No. 2 teams in Kindred and Napoleon. Both teams won their only game of the week, but apparently Kindred's win at Hankinson was more impressive than Napoleon's win at home against Carrington. I kept the two teams where they were from last week. If Kindred had beaten a ranked opponent then maybe I would have considered moving them above Napoleon.

Grafton (No. 4), Hillsboro-Central Valley (No. 5) and Grant County (No. 6) all benefited from losses by Shiloh Christian and Lakota-Adams-Edmore. As undefeated teams, it made perfect sense to move all three teams above Shiloh (No. 7) and L-A-E (No. 8).

The only puzzling move was the decision to move Thompson - the only newcomer to the poll - ahead of New Town. The Tommies (No. 9) blew out North Border before beating then 10th-ranked Central Cass at home. While impressive, it's hard to move a team from the receiving votes category to the No. 9 spot when the previous ninth-ranked team won its game. Granted, New Town won it's game against Dunseith by 51 points, but you can't punish a team for playing the schedule put in front of them. I agree Thompson should be in the top 10, but they should 10th, not ninth.

Three teams receiving votes have an unblemished record. Velva, Benson County and Larimore are all via to crack the top 10. Maple Valley (2-1) is in there as well after knocking off Shiloh. I'm a little surprised to see Dickinson Trinity receiving votes after its 45-point loss to Bishop Ryan.
