FOX's Mob Doctor is dead on arrival

September 25, 2012 - Andrea Johnson
Is it my imagination or is there less worth watching on TV than there used to be?

I ended up watching a new show last night on FOX called "The Mob Doctor" but it has so many plot holes you could drive a truck through them. It does the mob bit slightly better than ABC's soap "General Hospital," but that's not saying much.

The premise is that Grace (Jordana Spiro), a young Chicago doctor, has a loser baby brother (Jesse Lee Soffer) who has gambling debts. The mob will kill Grace's brother unless the mob doctor treats criminals on the sly. The problem with that plot, even in the second episode, is that no one seems to be suspicious of the female intern who's running expensive tests on a 90-year-old man (she's using the old man as a cover for the middle-aged mobster who really needs the test.) When her supervisor questions her, all it takes to make him back off is handsome mobster and Grace's ex boyfriend Franco (James Carpinello) saying the old guy is his grandfather and he's very happy with the care Grace is providing. Yeah .... right.

Also in the mix is Grace's current boyfriend, a nice guy doctor who is totally clueless about her shady activities, and a middle-aged mob boss called Constantine (William Forsythe) who killed the mobster threatening Grace last week and has looked out in some fashion for Grace since childhood. Constantine has now taken over the mob and is still holding the original deal over Grace for some reason, even though it was the first guy he killed who originally threatened her brother.

It turns out Grace's family, specifically Grace's mother (Wendy Makkena), has been friendly with Constantine for a long time and Grace suspects Constantine killed her father on her seventh birthday. Only Constantine swears in last night's episode that he didn't kill Grace's father. If this show lasts past the third episode, which I would say is EXTREMELY unlikely, it will probably come out that Constantine is actually Grace's real father and has known it all along. He didn't kill Grace's father; he killed her STEPFATHER. Big difference, right?

The episode ends with the loser brother asking Constantine for a job after he finds out Grace has been paying off his debt. The brother is probably Constantine's kid too, so maybe he'll end up learning the ropes from his long lost dad. We'll probably never know whether they'll all be one big, happy mob family since FOX will probably yank the show due to low ratings.

I like this low brow soap opera enough that I might track down the unaired episodes after they cancel it. That's only if I have nothing better to do.
