Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are getting divorced. Yes, it's really petty of me to care

June 29, 2012 - Andrea Johnson
I know I shouldn't care over much about celebrities, but it's hard to miss the Google headline "Katie Holmes files for divorce from Tom Cruise" that showed up about half an hour ago.

I don't know half the faces that pass as "celebrities" who are featured on the front covers of magazines I have to stare at while waiting in a very long line at the grocery store. Most are apparently reality show stars and I hate reality shows.

But Tom Cruise is a different matter. I had an enormous crush on him for a few weeks when I was 14. Blame it on "Top Gun." I still know who he is, but the difference is that now I think he's mighty weird: Exhibits A and B are his devotion to Scientology and all the tabloid pictures of his and Holmes' 6-year-old daughter, who wears high heels and seems to have been raised like the daughter of a maharajah. I haven't seen any of his movies for about 10 years, which was quite a deliberate choice. I couldn't watch him portray any character and forget that he was "Tom Cruise."

Considering the other urgent matters of the day, from the battle over health care reform to the Presidential election to the ongoing economic crisis around the globe, this story is really insignificant and it is petty for me to pay any note to it. That said, I took 30 seconds out of my day to be petty.

Best of luck to Katie Holmes in any future child custody and alimony proceedings. One probably less than reliable source says she's asking for sole legal and physical custody of their daughter and hopes to get her away from Scientology. Whatever her reasoning, I hope Katie's lawyer is a real shark.
