Clichés are clichés because they are true. Here’s one that you’re bound to hear every year come tournament time: It’s really hard to beat a team three times in a season.

Top-ranked Bismarck enters today’s Class A girls basketball state tournament semifinal against Minot High owning a 2-0 record versus the Majettes. The third meeting, scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Minot State Dome, could be a doozy.

In their last showdown, on Feb. 6, Minot (15-8) erased nearly all of a 16-point, second-half deficit. The Majettes, trailing by one in the final minute, had a chance to take the lead with a bucket, then had an opportunity in the closing seconds to tie it with a 3-pointer. Neither shot attempt threatened to score, and Bismarck (21-2) held on for a 71-66 victory at Magic City Campus.

The first time around, Minot held an eight-point lead in the early stages of the second half before the Demons breezed to a 77-63 victory in their season opener. The Majettes were outscored 22-2 in points off turnovers in that contest.

On Thursday, Bismarck pulled away from Valley City in a 60-50 state quarterfinal win and Minot upset No. 2 West Fargo 62-59, which improved its record in games decided by five points or less to 1-4.

The Majettes are in the state semifinals for the first time since 2001, when they placed second.
