No. 1 Bishop Ryan is three games away from a second straight state title, and its path to reach a state-record-tying 57 consecutive wins is now set.
The North Dakota High School Activities Association released the Class B girls basketball state tournament bracket Friday morning, and as expected, the Lions were awarded the top seed. They will play sixth-ranked and unseeded Lakota-Edmore at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fargodome.
Second-ranked Thompson, which hasn’t lost since falling to Ryan 60-45 in the season-opener, is seeded second. The Tommies (23-1) open with the Region 7 champion, seventh-ranked and unseeded Beach.
No. 3 Shiloh Christian secured the third seed and will face unseeded and unranked Kidder County in the opening round.
The last quarterfinal features No. 8 Central Cass, the fourth seed, and unranked Watford City, which snuck past No. 9 Parshall in the Region 8 championship.
Ryan only played three tournament teams in the regular season. The Lions beat the Tommies on Dec. 13 at the Minot Municipal Auditorium. On Dec. 19, Ryan overcame a 45-point effort from Fallyn Frieje to beat Lakota-Edmore 72-57 at home. Two days later, the Lions routed visiting Shiloh Christian 77-43.
