Minot has bigger issues than trash collection

Sarah Walker

Minot

I am responding to recent articles about the upcoming changes in trash collection. While I do have concerns for private trash collection businesses, the purpose of this letter is to address the changes to residential collection.

I moved here from Denver, CO, the end of November 2016. Trash receptacles very similar to the ones being distributed here in Minot, have been in use for a very long time in Denver. I do not know if there was pushback in the beginning, but as something that is the norm in Denver, I am not aware that these receptacles are a huge problem, and in fact, appear to make trash collection much easier and more efficient.

I’m struggling with the reporting of how it will play out here in Minot. I keep asking myself, what is the big deal? It’s trash. Does it really matter how it gets to the curb? Does it really matter what kind of receptacle it is in? In fact, I am happily anticipating less trash in my yard as these trash receptacles should keep trash better contained on our windy days.

There are so many things we really need to deal with here in Minot. Keeping our children safe. Opioid drug use. Flood protection and remediation. Low wages versus the high cost of living. Vitalizing downtown Minot. Helping our neighbors. Drought.

Again, we should spend less time worrying about trash. Our energies should be spent on things that will truly make Minot a magic city– a city where people are healthy and happy and proud to call Minot home.
