County didn’t set the fire

Dan Langemo

Minot

It is apparent that a certain writer for the Minot Daily News has an obvious disdain for the Ward County Commissioners, as evidenced by an opinion piece that appeared in the Saturday, May 20 edition of the Minot Daily News, which basically blames the commissioners for the fire at Earth Recycling.

The article states “At the risk of second guessing the Ward County Commission, that is where the blame seems most deserved. Earth Recycling is not within the city limits, therefore it is the county commission that is most to blame for kicking this particular can down the road.” Interestingly, Eloise Ogden’s front page story (on the same day) references Thursday’s new conference in which Rex Weltikol of the Minot Rural Fire Dept. stated the cause of the fire is unknown. Maybe the author should wait until the investigation has been completed before making such an egregious rush to judgment.

I know that the MDN is in the business of selling newspapers, but the opinion piece was reckless and irresponsible, in my estimation. The fact of the matter is that the author has allowed his/her personal animus towards the commission to cloud his/her better judgment, which is readily apparent by the last sentence of his column which states “This particular board seems to severely lack good judgment.” That final “cheap shot” was unnecessary and uncalled for, and to suggest that the commission is somehow at fault for the fire is simply shameful.
