Tragedy averted, thankfully

Beware of the moose.

You probably won’t find such a warning on a highway sign in the state – maybe, though – but caution is advised just the same.

Moose are warm and cuddly as stuffed toys but a big bull can wreck a semi if the two collide. And that does happen, even to automobile drivers.

Consider how lucky state Rep. Marvin Nelson of Rolla was last Friday when he survived a highway collision with a moose while returning home from a legislative session.

Nelson had slowed slightly as a moose crossed the roadway in front of him but then a second large cow moose stepped directly into the path of his vehicle.

“I thought that was the end of it for me,” Nelson told the Minot Daily News. “I ducked to the right and below the dashboard.”

Thankfully Nelson and two passengers – both his grandchildren – were not seriously injured, as we reported elsewhere in this edition.

Most drivers live in fear of hitting a deer on the highway, which can occur any time of year, any time of day. One would think drivers would notice a moose in the ditch, but consider how dark they are. Especially at night moose are, well, an accident waiting to happen.

Rep. Nelson, were are so thankful your accident didn’t result in tragedy.

Be safe out there. Everybody
