At very least, we are better than…

A year ago, a Bernie Sanders fan tried to assassinate a group of Republican congressmen playing ball on their off time.

A former Secretary of State says there is no reason to be civil to the opposition party because they disagree on policy.

Leadership of one party calls for the physical confrontation with leaders of another party.

Mobs take to the street seeking violence and are shielded by media.

Now, either a crazy or crazies target some leading political figures.

Politics. It’s beyond ugly out there. But at least… we aren’t them – peddling hate, tolerating violence, too afraid of disagreements to visit our own favorite coffee shop.

Sure, politics in North Dakota can be rough and tumble. It can get unpleasant. All one has to do is watch an evening worth of television to see how personal, how questionably honest, how nasty some races can get. But compared to national politics, it’s child’s play.

However unpleasant contests can become here, North Dakotans over time seem to have conditioned candidates to understand that there are limits to what we will tolerate as campaign propaganda and what is acceptable behavior. However contentious a race might be, candidates will still meet for debates and conduct themselves as adults. Whatever outcomes are, former rivals might need to work together and historically are able to.

At least Minot Daily News hopes this is still the case.
