Support your local firefighters

The arrival of police at one’s doors can prompt any number of reactions – from relief and a sense of security, to trepidation and concern.

Firefighters, while similar public servants who also risk their lives for their neighbors, generally elicit a simpler reaction: gratitude. People can have complicated relationships with law enforcement – even many who are law abiding. It’s the nature of our culture. Firefighters, however, have one overarching responsibility – to save lives and property, regardless of whose lives and property. That places them pretty high on any hero chart.

While many might think of their municipal department in firefighter terms, the reality is that in a state such as ours, rural firefighters are an incredibly important component of life savings services. We see that in rural areas in our vicinity; and we saw their effectiveness at the Earth Recycling fire earlier this year.

There can never be enough opportunities to thank and support our rural firefighters. Here in town, the Minot Rural Firefighters host one annual fundraiser. On Wednesday at 6 p.m., the Minot Rural Firefighters will hold their annual fundraiser at the North Dakota State Fair Center Theater.

They will have country recording artist Scott Haggard as the performer for the evening. Haggard will perform not only a tribute to his father, Merle Haggard, but will be performing favorite holiday songs in light of the Christmas season.

Proceeds from the concert will go to fund better firefighter training, fire safety programs, and holiday toys and gifts for kids and families in need in the community for youth organizations such as the Minot School District Programs and The Boys and Girls Ranch.

Tickets are $10 if purchased in advanced and can be found at all Marketplace Foods locations. If purchased at the gate, the tickets cost $15. One ticket admits either one single adult or two children who are 12 years of age or younger.

If most people can agree that firefighters deserve unquestionable support, then the same is true of Minot Rural Firefighters.

It seems such a simple thing for such a return offered by our rural firefighters.

Let’s come out and support our guardians, our real heroes. It seems such a small thing.
