City offers help and advice on holiday cleanup
Minot residents’ trash cans might resemble Santa’s pack stuffed with toys this year, the first Christmas under the city’s new automated trash collection system.
Wondering how all of that Christmas wrap is going to fit into one can? Well, the city has some advice on that as well as some important schedule changes to take note of.
You might not find all of the advice helpful, but under the circumstances we’ll take what we can get.
According to a notice from the City of Minot, free dumping at the City Landfill will be allowed between Dec. 27 and Jan. 6 to help Minot residents dispose of household waste that could accumulate during the holidays. City of Minot Sanitation Superintendent John Reynolds said that residents can dispose of accumulated trash at the landfill free of charge during the holidays by bringing a current water bill as proof of residency. The landfill will be open its normal hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but will be closed Saturday, Dec. 23.
“We recognize that during the holidays there will be three days with no regular garbage collection, so this provides residents with another opportunity to dispose of trash,” Reynolds said.
The City noted that there will be no garbage collection on Monday, Dec. 25, and Tuesday, Dec. 26. There will also be no collection on Monday, Jan. 1. Regularly scheduled collection resumes Tuesday, Jan. 2.
For residents with regular Monday/Thursday garbage collection: Collections will take place Thursday, Dec. 21, and Thursday, Dec. 28. For residents with regular Tuesday/Friday garbage collection: Collections will take place Friday, Dec. 22, and Friday Dec. 29.
As for Christmas trees, the City will again provide dumpsters at two locations to help residents dispose of them. Dumpsters will be at Site # 7 located at 16th Street SW and 16th Avenue SW, and at Site #3 located at 11th Street NW and 4th Avenue NW.
As to how to get rid of all that crumpled up Christmas wrap, Reynolds had this to say.
“We would ask that residents try to condense their wrapping paper down as much as possible before they bag it and place it into the containers. We suggest residents try not to pack the bags of wrapping paper deep down into the container so the bags don’t get stuck in there.”
Maybe that’s how Santa Claus does it too.
