Super two lane highway concept worth watching

Economics change dramatically, particularly in energy country. Needs and trends also tend to change quickly and intensely. Facilitating transportation in our part of the country and between Canada and the U.S. is extremely important to the future of North Dakota’s economy.

That’s why the idea of creating a super two-lane highway between Regina, Sask., and Jamestown is an idea well worth considering. Even if, for financial reasons, the time isn’t quite right on the U.S. side of the issue.

Creating such a highway was the topic of a discussion this week between Saskatchewan officials and N.D. officials and was well worth the effort. Saskatchewan already has plans on the board, as expressed at a summit in Kenmare this week.

Some believe further research is needed as North Dakota has no plans on the books to four-lane Highway 52 at this time. However, Ward County Commissioner Alan Walter expressed the belief that the time for study has passed and the time for some kind of action is here.

Cost and economics aside, Walter might have a point. The slowdown in gas and oil activity in the Bakken doesn’t mean North Dakota shouldn’t be prepared for inevitable change.

In North Dakota, too often we react to ephemeral conditions instead of employing forethought in viewing what is ahead of us.

Keeping a close eye on this situation is only wise. Hopefully, the calls of Canadian officials and local figures such as Walter only makes sense.

Let’s continue to think for the long-term even if our needs require us to advance for the shorter term. This is only smart planning.

This issue warrants being at least on the back burner as North Dakota prepares for the inevitable uptick in economic activity.
