Plan for a purple Thursday

However deep people need to dig into their closets to find something purple, they are encouraged to this Thursday.

On Thursday, people will be wearing purple on National Domestic Violence Awareness Day and, locally, wearing purple also celebrates Minot Domestic Violence Crisis Center’s 40 years of service in the region.

Let’s all take part in recognizing the occasion, at the very least.

Imagine where the issue of domestic violence was 40 years ago when Minot Domestic Violence Crisis Center launched. Like too many other social ills (and crimes), domestic violence was too often unseen, unreported, un-addressed. Women, children – and men – suffered quietly. Society not addressing the issue appeared as if it was tacit endorsement – or at least acceptance – of the lives of quiet desperation of so many.

It’s impossible to know if the scourge of domestic violence is wider spread today or if awareness just makes it seem so. But it remains an unacceptable aspect of our culture that must be pursued and eliminated in all corners of society.

Minot Daily News strongly advocates observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Day, as well as support of DVCC and the incredibly important service it provides the community.

Participants are invited to post photos of themselves in their purple attire on DVCC’s Facebook page at DVCCMinot. Additionally, the annual “Take Back the Night” event will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Student Union’s Beaver Dam on the Minot State University campus, with speakers and a luminary walk.

Let’s plan for a purple Thursday.
