Minot P.D., retailers pitch a rare perfect game

Congratulations to the Minot Police Department and local purveyors of tobacco products for a perfect score on a Sept. 16 tobacco compliance check. In fact, and to be fair, this was a second consecutive perfect score.

From the Minot P.D.: “We are excited to announce that all 34 licensed businesses PASSED these checks, resulting in 100% compliance by refusing to sell to our volunteer minors sent in to attempt to purchase tobacco products. This check resulted in 100% compliance by all Minot tobacco retailers for the second time in a row, which has never previously happened.”

Completely setting aside the possibility of a retailer, even a single clerk, knowingly breaking the law, it is still always possible for mistakes to be made either in the rush of business, by a new employee or a simple quick but wrong decision. Absent of malice, that is, full compliance still isn’t an absolute certainty.

Yet, twice now that is exactly what our local police have found in almost three dozen businesses around Minot.

The department’s efforts to prevent tobacco sales to minors are admirable and obviously pretty effective. Responsible business operators are also worthy of praise.

A hearty thanks and salute to the Minot P.D. and honest merchants.
