Latest improvements at Municipal Auditorium the best yet

Going to the Minot Municipal Auditorium to sit through a basketball game or other event just won’t be the same without the original fold-up wooden seats.

Great day in the morning.

Our backs and backsides would be greatly relieved to know the last of those torture devices installed in the Aud back in the mid-1950s are being pulled out.

MDN reporter Kim Fundingsland caught up with facility manager Scott Collins a few days ago and reported on the improvements under way and those yet to come.

Collins said installing the new seats, which are the same as those in the new Maysa Arena, will take a couple of weeks to complete.

Besides being, we assume, more comfortable than the old wooden finger pinchers, the news seats will allow 5 inches more of leg room.

Hallelujah.

All jokes aside, the Minot Municipal Auditorium has been and still is a wonderful venue for events from popular country artists to rock bands, religious revivals to circuses, graduation ceremonies, proms and even ice skating shows. The place has a rich history – and a lot of years left in it.

While the improved Aud will have seating for just 2,862, that is more than enough to warrant the additional improvements that they city has planned.

Heating and cooling upgrades are being completed now and better lighting in hallways and offices are in the works, as is a new arena floor.

Considering all of the buildings that Minot has lost to old age in recent years, including what many of us had still called the “new” airport terminal, it is both remarkable and heartwarming that our Minot Municipal Auditorium is getting the attention and respect that it deserves.
