Sears had a long run in Minot

It will be a sad day sometime this fall when Sears closes its Minot retail store.

Sears has been a fixture in the business scene in Minot for generations, starting downtown on North Main, just north of the Taube Museum.

The store later known for having everything moved to Town & Country Shopping Center in the 1960s when the mall was the place to be.

Then, when Dakota Square Mall opened, Sears planted itself in a prominent wing. It was a good draw, and so near to the court clock. Sears Court hosted Christmas concerts year after year, and dance recitals among other attractions.

Oddly, the advent of the mall was the beginning of the decline of downtown; now Sears and other retail brick and mortar stores are falling victim to the next wave of commercial activity – online shopping.

It is much too soon to say that Sears is dead. There are still many Sears stores around the country and online sales will continue, media reports say.

But the days of the Sears catalog and Sears Wish Book are long gone – and soon, at least for Minot shoppers, there will be one fewer place to find just the right item for somebody or yourself that you can pick up to feel or to try on.

Yes, it will be a sad day when Sears closes in Minot. And we feel bad for the employees as well as faithful shoppers. Also sad, we are afraid there will be many more stores like Sears to close in the near future.
