Minot shows its pride, commitment

With around 200 people in attendance at the Grand Hotel Wednesday night for the Minot Daily News/Grand Hotel candidates forum, a large and diverse sampling of local residents spoke up: “We’re proud of our community, want the best for it, and want to help guide the city to a better tomorrow.”

That’s the message when so many local folks invest a weeknight – just prior to a holiday weekend, no less – in meeting, learning about and chatting with the nine candidates in Minot’s city council election coming June 13. A ballroom full of people of varying ages and backgrounds came together to gather information for the important decisions every voter faces next month.

Congratulations to these fine, concerned and engaged residents for standing up and being counted as among those with a true interest in the betterment of Minot and its people.

Congratulations also to the candidates, who openly shared about themselves, their backgrounds and platforms, ideas and priorities. Additionally, candidates willingly fielded a range of questions and spent time chatting with guests after the formal component of the forum. They were good sports, open and honest, and it was good to see both areas in which there is considerable agreement as well as areas of differences.

If apathy was one of the unfortunate factors that helped encourage mismanagement and missteps by local elected officials, then a show of passion and concern of this degree demonstrates that plenty of folks are interested in reinvesting themselves in the governance and future of the city. That’s just what the doctor ordered for Minot.
