Congratulations MHS wrestlers on winning state

Minot High School hadn’t won a state team wrestling title since 1993, and the honor almost slipped through their hands again this past weekend.

But it didn’t. The Magi won, so congratulations to all of the wrestlers, their coaches and others in the Magi’s corner when they were needed throughout the year.

That includes parents, who know all too well how much effort their wrestlers put into the sport, and how much value they place on being a team and winning together.

But there was also a lesson to be learned in Saturday’s win. Or maybe re-learned, because all athletes are coached to never give up. And that’s what won the day and ultimately the year for the Magi.

As Minot Daily News Sports Editor Garrick Hodge reported, chances for a team win were looking bleak on the second day of the tournament.

“The Magicians dropped both of their team dual meets, saw six of seven wrestlers lose their semifinal matches and sat in fifth place in the team standings, trailing Bismarck by nearly 70 points,” Hodge wrote.

But after a team meeting in which coach Justin Racine expressed his confidence in the team, the next day 13 athletes placed and scored 86 points en route to bringing home the team’s first Class A individual team title since 1993.

It was a most memorable day for Magi wrestling. Congratulations too to Racine, named Class A Coach of the Year.

Without a doubt, each and every wrestler on the MHS championship team will remember that they won state in 2017. Hopefully they will also remember how they wrestled clean and never quit on themselves. That is as important a lesson as any they could learn in the classroom.
