Airport savings is show of good leadership

Bravo to Airport Director Rick Feltner and his crew for news last week that landscaping costs for the post-construction beautification are coming in well under budget. In fact, $37,600 is well, well under the initially planned $108,000.

The savings comes as a result of an initial plan proving to be too costly. The current, cost-saving plan calls for acquisition of trees and shrubbery from the Minot Forestry Department and their installation.

It’s not terribly cynical to say that a government agency anywhere coming in under budget on a project like this is uncommon.

Minot International Airport is a source of pride in the community and an example of a well-done government project. The new terminal is practical and handsome and the airport is now more positioned for regional growth than any other institution. We all want the grounds to match the terminal in being a scenic entryway to our city. Minot Park District worked with the airport to develop the new plan, so there is every reason to believe the result will be superior.

The city’s Airport Committee has proposed using a small portion of the landscape savings for a new system for security between the pre-screened and screened portions of the terminal, which certainly seems reasonable.

Net savings to taxpayers: $60,247, according to numbers from the committee.

Great job, Mr. Feltner, staff and Minot Park District.
