Cleve Edwin Cowley,

88, passed away Sunday

Jan. 6, 2019 in Bismarck,

ND. A graveside service

will be held on Friday,

Jan. 11 at 11am at the

North Dakota Veterans

Cemetery, Mandan ND.

Cleve was born in

Dupree, SD on May 28,

1930 to Rex and Hattie

Cowley. Cleve graduated

from Ambrose High

School in June 1948 and

joined the Navy two

weeks after graduation.

He married his High

School sweetheart Donna

Gjovig on Nov. 14, 1951

while home on leave from

the Navy. After his time

in the Navy he attended

MSTC where he received

his teaching degree in En-

glish. He later received a

master’s degree in Laram-

ie, WY. Cleve taught

school in Coteau, Am-

brose, and Crosby where

he was not only an En-

glish teacher buy also a

school counselor, princi-

pal and coach.

After Cleve retired from

teaching he was a cus-

toms officer in Noonan,

ND and Whitetail, MT for

6 years. Cleve and Donna

then retired and moved to

Hebron, ND where they

lived until 2016, at which

time Cleve moved to Man-

dan, ND after Donna’s


Cleve had a love for all

kinds of music. He en-

joyed playing his piano,

violin, harmonica,

ukulele, and guitar. In his

free time, you could also

find him playing a game

of cards with friends or at

the local bingo hall. In his

younger years he enjoyed

all types of dancing and

attending community


Cleve is survived by his

sons, Steven (Natalie)

Cowley, West Fargo, Kelly

Cowley, Minot; daughters,

Kimberly (David)

Saunders, Warrenton, NC;

Melodee Groninger,

Minot; 10 Grandchildren,

9 great-grandchildren and

numerous nieces and


He was proceeded in

death by his wife Donna

Cowley, his parents Rex

Cowley and Hattie Selle

and his brother William
